Morgana's betrayal hurts him deeper then most people realize. He thinks Merlin sees it, but even he, his (grudgingly) closest friend, doesn't see the true extent of his pain.
Arthur thinks that maybe it's because he knew Morgana, since he was a little boy, pulling her hair and chasing her through the castle. Although they bickered, he was certain she had a good heart. As they got older, he fancied her, had thoughts about marrying her. Soon, that came to an end too, but the mutual bond did not. He loved her. In so many ways.
What kills him the most, is that she pretended to be faithful to Camelot for a months, fooling everyone. He remembers when they finally found her after she was "missing", the relief, the happiness. He remembers when she fell, and he was so worried. He said he would give up his place on the throne, just so she could see another sun rise. Those words rung true, he would, without a doubt.
When Arthur finds out that she's his half sister, that within itself gives him pain. His own father lied to him for years. Then she betrayed them, without even a glance back. Without even thinking about how much all these people cared about her here. His father was heartbroken. So was he.
But life goes on. And Morgana was put to the back of their minds. Never forgotten. His father dies, Arthur knows Morgana's behind it in some shape or form. Over and over again, Morgana tries to take over Camelot, over and over again she fails. Until the army comes, and he and Merlin become outlaws. He saw her for a second, just before they fled the castle. She looks so much different. There's not love in her eyes. Just hate. So much hate.
When they come back. Morgana and him talk for the first time in a year. He stands close, a mere foot apart. And puts away his sword.
"What happened to you Morgana? I thought we were friends."
His heart aches, and he wonders where it all fell apart. And her face- oh god her face. It's not just hate in her eyes, he can see remorse. Arthur decides right then and there he wants to save her, with all his heart. He wants to help her. Mend her.
But alas, she makes it clear, those days are far behind them. The fighting ensues. They win. Morgana is presumed dead. But Arthur knows she's still alive. He can feel it, he remembers her face during their last confrontation. And he cries. For Morgana. For Uther. For himself. For those condemned to destinies.
Arthur still loves her. He still wants to help her. He still has hope that some day, when they're old and tired, that him and Morgana can sit down and actually talk. Something they were never able to do from the beginning. Late at night, when Gwen's asleep next to him. He thinks about the old days, the bickering, the sweet smell of the woods...
"As did I. But alas, we were both wrong."
A/N: Yeah, I be writing Merlin right now xD But the Arthur Morgana moment in the finale was so beautiful it was hard not to. You can interpret the Arthur/ Morgananess however you want to. So as a brother-sister angst, or like heysexyincest. It's pretty open.
Now we just need another Merlin Morgana encounter and then my life will be complete. Sorry if this kinda sucks... Wrote it at about 1 am...
