Letting go.
Characters: The 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, mentions of Rose Tyler.
Pairing: The Doctor/Rose
Disclaimer: I don't own Doctor Who.
A/N This is my way of accepting the brilliant Matt Smith as the next Doctor. I know he'll be wonderful. This is also my way of showing that whoever the 'Evil Steven Moffatt' brings into the series for the Doctor to have as a romantic interest, The Doctor will always love Rose.

'Why can't I let you go?' he whispered to himself, so quietly his red-headed companion couldn't hear him as they lay on the grass looking at the ethereal twinkling stars above.
They'd done it, saved the earth in twenty minutes, a newly regenerated him and a fantastic red head orphan from the twenty-first century.
And she was fantastic, Amy Pond. Fantastic like Donna, Martha, Sarah Jane…
Fantastic like Rose.
So why couldn't he let himself move on. He knew that Rose and the other him were happy in Pete's world, both living out their human lives together completely in love, maybe even married and with any luck a baby TARDIS grown from the chunk of coral he'd given to them.
But still he couldn't let her go, couldn't relinquish the bond he had with her, had always had with her, would always have with her.
He'd hoped that by giving her younger self his final goodbye on that New Year's morning, the snow swirling around them, that he would then be able to regenerate without the pain of their separation forever tormenting him.
But no, he missed her as much as ever, now even more so as his body was younger, lighter and nearly healed from the trauma of the Time War.
And worst of all, he knew he could say the words now.
The words that had forever choked him with their domestic undertones now seemed so easy to say. This body would have been able to tell her he loved her with no hesitation, even though he knew the 'forever' she'd promised him would be the one promise she'd never be able to keep, no matter how much she tried.
As these thoughts flew through his, as usual, over active mind, he answered Amy's suggestions for their next destination.
'How about that one?' she asked, pointing straight in front of her to one of the brilliant scattered stars.
'Bit green up close.' He told her.
'That one's flickering.'
He noticed it too, and remembered his previous trip to that star.
'Yeah, sorry thought I'd fixed that.'
'Who are you?' Amy asked, turning to face him curiously.
'I'm the Doctor.' He told her, in turn facing her, a mysterious superior half-smile gracing his features.
'Doctor Who?'
'Who are you?'
'I told you! The Doctor.'
'Yeah but…Doctor what?'
'Just The Doctor.'
'The Doctor?'
'Hello!'
And as Amy's words bought the rush of memories to him, a sense of blessing washed over him, and despite the distance of time and space between them he could feel her blessing from across the void.
'I love you. You have to let me go.'
These nine words floating almost magically into his mind shocked him, and to his surprise, he felt himself immediately think to the future. Something he'd not done since he'd first met her.
He knew he'd always love Rose, his saviour after the Time War and no matter who came into his life, brilliant red-headed companions or strange, mysterious and slightly overbearing River Song's, no matter who he came to care for or treasure, love or marry; Rose would always be there at the centre of both his hearts.
'All of time and space everywhere and anywhere, every star there ever was. Where do you want to start?'

Reviews would be greatly appreciated as I'm currently writing a novel and any constructive criticism would be useful.
Any noticeable dialogue is from the new Doctor Who 'In the Vortex trailer' (and possibly 'The Eleventh Coming') and Series 1: Rose.
