"You and I, we walk a fragile line. But I never thought I'd live to see it break." With that, Stella picked up her bag and left the change room.
Shannon walked home that night, in the quiet, almost comforting, darkness. The night embraced her, muffled her sobs and dried her tears. She knew she'd made a mistake, but how to fix it?
"Shannon, I stood there, and watched you walk away from everything we had. But I still mean every word I said to you."
The older of the two wiped her eyes. "He will try to take away my pain, and he just might make me smile. But the whole time, I'm wishing he was you instead."
"You can't be good."
Stella grinned, that infamous wicked smile, and rolled Shannon over on the mattress, so she knelt over the older woman.
"Oh really?"
"Something's made your eyes go cold." Stella rubbed her eyes, fighting the tears back.
"I thought I had you figured out." Shannon reached for Stella's hands, briefly encouraged when Stella allowed her to take them. "You're all I wanted."
"Something keeps me holding onto nothing." Stella chugged the last of her beer, handing the glass back to the sympathetic barkeeper.
"Can't breathe whenever she's gone?"
"Something like that." Stella gestured for another.
Shannon glanced towards the prone form on the futon next to her, and shook her head, standing up and putting her clothes back on.
Lawson would never be as gentle, as understanding, as Stella. Not even close.
"And it's coming over you, like it's all a big mistake!" Shannon clenched her fists.
"We were never a mistake, Shan. Why can't you see that? I won't lose you again."
"I can't turn back now." Shannon set the glass down, turning her attention back to Kerry.
"And why's that? She's going crazy."
"That's why. I'm haunted."
