It was in nights like this that he remembered what it's like to be a human. She was in front of his house, sobbing loudly as she slowly walked to her car. He felt her emotions - sadness and pain, mixed with love that she tried so desperately to make possible in the word where his kind shouldn't even exist. After all, they were just some mistake of nature, predators trapped in a body of a human, walking aimlessly on the Earth. Forever. What was the point of forever when your only company is your long – hated brother and an ex-whore-girlfriend who is now wrapped in his arms somewhere in that damn tomb?

Elena didn't deserve this. He could smell the salt of her tears when she finally broke down, seeing her beloved boyfriend, the good brother, kissing Katherine like she was the only girl in the world. His fingers were running through her hair, pulling her closer to him as his touches became more and more feverish. It was so unnatural, so wrong to see someone looking exactly like her, exchanging passionate kisses and moans with Stefan. Then, when he finally saw Damon and Elena watching their little sex show, he tried explaining, but somehow his eyes were more alive than Damon remembered. It was like 150 years ago, when they first met Katherine. Damon didn't realize that with her disappearance part of Stefan died. It now looked like he was regretting being caught; he regretted the timing when he realized that Katherine is the only one for him; always was and always will be. But it didn't look like he regretted the fact that he still loved her. And that was the last drop for Elena.

Damon carried her out, wrapping her warmly and mumbling some comforting words, lost in her glassy, brown eyes that didn't believe anymore that there is any hope left in this cold, dark world. He couldn't believe that something so fragile and broken can be so beautiful. It seemed like his worm embrace calmed her a little bit, as her tears dried out. Now, she was just holding on to him, so tightly, like her world, or at least, what is left of it, will fall apart into tiny, little peaces, if he let her go. As he ever could. But she didn't know that.

To her, things that used to be so simple, black and white, now were in some dark shade of grey. Only other color, that she was now dazzled by, was blue depth of his eyes. She used to think that his eyes were like ice, matching with his non-beating heart, careless, cold and loveless. Now, it seemed like his eyes were like I sky that she fell through. Sky, that was open, free and made just for her. She didn't know when she stopped thinking of him as a sociopath and psychopath, and started seeing him as a knight in a shining black armor. Settled in his arms, she was hidden from the cruel world that just threw more and more punches at her. Looking once again at the face of her devilish hero, she closed her eyes, wondering how come the one person that frightened her most is now the only person she could count on.

So, now, looking her through the window, Damon didn't know what had happened so that little, fragile human girl could capture the heart he didn't even know he owned. When she walked into his life with her puppy eyes and a naïve smile he loved so much, she became the center of his universe. He wasn't going to let that feeling go, wasn't going to let HER go. She has been hurt too many times, she deserved to be happy. He just wanted to be the one that she will smile for.

With a heavy sigh, and a decision on his mind, he walked through the door to wipe the tears away from the face of the girl he loved with his whole dark heart.
