Jacob paced the long-disused SGC gate room, glancing at the Chapa'ai with anticipation. Although the room was filled with both alien and human equipment only the Stargate was in any shape to be used.
"How much longer?" he asked his companion.
"It should only be a few more minutes." answered Sina. Finishing her diagnostic, the woman disconnected the portable computer from the great ring and reverently touched one of the chevrons. "Years of preparation Counselor and it all comes down to this moment."
With a sigh Jacob sat down on a dusty crate, massaging his aching knees "Let's just hope Sam gets here soon - Cassie may arrive at anytime now."
"We mustn't-" Sina's speech was cut off unexpectantly as the room shook and the Chapa'ai came to life for the first time in decades. Immediately forgetting his aches and pains, Jacob sprang into action.
"It will be easier if me and my host do this alone" Selmak spoke. "You should go help Jalen and Korra."
"Councilor, I don't think-"
"Please Sina," Selmak continued "Samantha would only recognize my host - your presence will raise more unwanted questions."
The final chevron locked and with a familiar "kawoosh" a vortex formed, connecting the present to the past. Glancing at the blue puddle, Sina nodded and reluctantly hurried out of the room, upset that she would not witness the historic moment.
One by one the members of SG-1 exited the event horizon, leaving behind the nineteen-sixties. Gone were their traditional BDUs, replaced with bright flowered-patterned clothing, bellbottom pants and tie-dyed bandannas.
"Has this really been the traditional clothing on your planet?" Selmak questioned teasingly "Even the Goa'uld would find them gaudy."
"Hey, at least we Tau'ri wear something other than beige leather."
Last through the gate was Jack O'Niel, who flew out of the device with a scream of "Get down!" as several bullets impacted the ramp around him. Fortunately the wormhole shut off preventing any more surprises from following the team to the future.
Disoriented, SG-1 looked around the darkened room which was so familiar yet so different. Where there were once machine guns and muscle-bound marines now stood crates and tarp-covered devices, as if someone turned the gate room into a storage unit for all their intergalactic junk.
"Auntie Em?" asked Jack, getting to his feet "Oh Auntie Em?"
"Where is everyone?" asked Carter, voicing her teammates' confusion.
"On the Kerguelen Islands." said Jacob, stepping out of the shadows "Or the Kalahari. Despite the world-wide disclosure, the Terran Collective really tries to keep the location of the current SGC and its fancy new Stargate secret, supposedly for security reasons."
"D-dad?" Sam stammered in shock. The man that stood before her resembled her father, though clearly ravaged by time. His face drooped with age, what little hair he had was completely gone leaving behind a wrinkled scalp and he moved with the aid of a mahogany cane. Even his previously pristine Tok'Ra uniform was not spared and looked ragged and worn.
"Hey kiddo," the old man smiled, spreading his arms "how about a hug?"
The Major ran down the ramp and embraced Jacob tightly "Good god, Dad - what happened to you?"
"I think it must be obvious by now." answered Selmak, startling everyone slightly "The solar flare threw you too far into the future. Fortunately we can send you back."
"How did you know we'd come here?" asked Daniel suspiciously.
"That is a rather long tale Dr. Jackson" answered the symbiote, finally disengaging from Sam "but suffice to say that upon returning to your own time, you wrote reports explaining what happened and how the "future" SGC sent you home. As Earth and it's allies learned more about the Stargate and your incident we were able to determine when exactly you will show up."
"Like a self-fulfilling prophecy" surmised Carter.
Jacob smiled slightly "Something like that."
A small earpiece chirped in the elder Carter's ear "Selmak, it's Korra. We won't be able to hold them off much longer. They will reach you shortly."
"I have so much to ask you." Sam said giddily, unaware of Korra's foreboding message.
"I know Sammie, I know. But there is no time - you have to go now if you're to make it back" pressing a device attached to the back of his hand Jacob activated the Stargate, once more filling the room with its blue glow.
Nodding in understanding, Sam took out her GDO and entered the code. Before she could turn around to leave though her father reached out a hand to stop her.
"The things you wanted to ask me? The answers are here." said Jacob as he pulled a data crystal out of his pocket.
A myriad of emotions quickly played across Sam's face before settling in a frown "Dad... I can't. If that's information about the future, it will alter the timeline."
The man just shrugged "Look, I know your journey's just begun, but trust me when I say this isn't the first time we've encountered such things. Turns out that after you learn to blow up suns and defeat million year old galactic empires using only a box, changing timelines doesn't seem all that scary by comparison."
Seeing that his words only further confused Sam, Jacob sighed and shoved the crystal into his daughter's hand. "Look, just take it. You can always choose not to look at it if you want, but at least you'll have an opportunity to fix the mistakes we never could the first time around."
After a moment of contemplation Carter came to a decision. With a final nod, she once again hugged her father and hurried off to the Stargate. The event horizon swallowed the travelers in reverse order, with O'Niell pausing briefly to stare at the 'gate.
"You said we'll be getting a new one of these?" he asked.
The Tok'Ra grimaced "Yeah, but it doesn't spin. Better enjoy this one while it lasts."
Not sure what to make of the message, Jack stepped through leaving Jacob alone in the room. Before the wormhole even had a chance to disengage the Tok'Ra felt a surge of pain as all his muscles convulsed at once and darkness claimed him.
Jacob didn't know how long he was out for but when he woke there was two Terran Gendarmes standing over him, their stun-rifles ready to send him once again into unconsciousness at the slightest provocation. Carter also noticed his fellow Tok'Ra conspirators kneeling on the floor in the corner of the gateroom guarded by another gaggle of security troops.
The aged Cassandra Fraiser finally walked into the room, stoping in front of the former general.
"Jacob, Selmak" she said icily "what have you done? How did you manage to get in here in the first place?"
"Hello Cassie," with a groan (and a begrudging helping hand from one of the gendarmes) the elderly man got to his feet "you know us Tok'Ra - we've been sneaking into places for centuries. Me and Sel just decided to try our skills one last time."
Horror spread over Cassandra's face as realization hit her "What have you done? Where is SG-1?"
A sad smile appeared on Jacob's lips " Sorry Cas - I couldn't let Sam die fighting those Hive ships."
To his surprise Carter found himself once more on his back with stars dancing in his eyes. Despite her age Frasier could throw an unusually strong punch when she wanted to.
"Damn it you old fool! You think it would have been easy for me to see her again after all those years? To let her go back knowing what will happen?" she screamed tearfully "But you know we couldn't risk it: everything Earth has accomplished can be undone by changing the timeline! Is that what Sam would have wanted?"
"It doesn't matter now." Jacob closed his eyes as the world started to dissolve around him.
Fin.
