Chapter One
High school. Or should it be called purgatory? After attending high school for the passed thirty-or-forty years, the material became repetitive and damn near mind numbing.
But that was the life I decided to follow with my foster family. It helped to know that I wasn't the only one suffering through the charade of being a high schooler. My siblings endured the suffering as well.
The small school was abuzz with excitement today. A new student had arrived from Arizona, and since the school's students in this small town had grown up together, it was always an exciting time when new students came. I still remember the excitement when the five of us had enrolled.
Her name was Isabella Swan. She preferred to be called Bella and she corrected anyone who called her by her full name. She was the daughter of the police chief of this small town. Apparently, she was from a previous relationship and she had come to live with her dad for a while.
She was somewhat of a surprise because no one knew that the chief had any kids. The rumors were that the mother had hidden Bella until now, or that the chief had been ashamed of his bastard child. I couldn't be sure because I hadn't been close enough to the chief to figure out the mystery.
From the other students I had seen her face a million times. She was a pretty girl, but almost seemed as if she were in the wrong century. She had milky white skin that was sought after in the earlier centuries. Her eyes were a wide owl-like brown framed by thick lashes. Her hair was long and dark chocolate brown with highlights of auburn red.
Her frame was small too. Almost unnaturally small. She reminded me of Alice, but she was closer to normal female height, she reminded me of Alice because of how small she was. Small features, small bodies.
To say the least in regards to her appearance, the boys in the school were lining up to get a chance to date her. And most of the girls were pretty jealous of her.
Jessica Stanley, a generically popular girl, had claimed Bella as her new best friend and was flaunting her around school. If Bella even knew the two-faced person Jessica was, she'd be very reluctant to sit with her at lunch.
At the moment, Jessica was telling Bella all the dirty laundry about our family. In the two years we had been here, several rumors had accumulated from the others. We hadn't done anything to warrant the rumors, but because we kept to ourselves, we drew attention. People loved to speculate.
When she walked into the cafeteria, it seemed as if the entire lunchroom had gravitated towards her. Jessica had her arm looped through Bella's and was chatting as if they were best friends. Lauren, Jessica's previous best friend, was thinking daggers towards the poor girl, thoroughly angry by the amount of attention she was receiving.
They went through the lunch line then sat down at the table in the middle of the room. The student body surrounded them, pushing tables closer and trying to get as close to Bella as possible.
Bella's eyes scanned the room and fell onto our table. She leaned over to Jessica and asked her about us.
"Oh, those are the Cullens," Jessica said with a dismissive toss of her curly hair, "They moved here like two years ago from Alaska."
Bella nodded, "Are they siblings? They don't look alike."
"They're foster siblings. Dr. Cullen and his wife adopted them, I think. That one is Emmett; the other boy is Edward and the tiny girl is Alice. The two blonds are brother and sister. Twins, I think. Jasper and Rosalie. I think Rosalie and Jasper are Mrs. Cullen's niece and nephew. So, they're family. The rest of them are adopted."
"Hmm, how nice of Mr. and Mrs. Cullen."
"Yeah, well, he's some sort of match maker to because they're all together. Emmett is with Rosalie and Jasper is with Alice."
"And the one with reddish brown hair? Who's he with?"
"He doesn't date," She said sourly, "Apparently, no one around here is good enough for him."
I leaned over towards Emmett, "Jessica Stanley is giving the new student all of the dirty laundry on the Cullens."
Emmett chuckled, "I hope she's making it good." He thought.
"Unoriginal. Just the barest hint of scandal. Not even an ounce of horror."
"And what does the new one think?"
I looked over to the table and searched for Bella's inner voice.
I couldn't find it. I could hear everyone else's voice but not hers. Perhaps her inner voice was quieter and lost among all the others. I stared directly at her now as she had her head turned.
Silence.
There was no voice to be heard. Which was odd, and almost unnerving because I never had to check on my hearing ability before. I stared harder at her, trying my hardest to find her voice.
She turned her head now, her eyes meeting mine. Her cheeks tinted a slight red, but instead of turning her head away, her eyes narrowed. It was as if she were telling me not to read her mind. I turned my head quickly, feeling silly for staring at her so intensely.
I shook the feeling away. What was silly was allowing myself to be intimidated by a human. Especially one that looked as if the wind could knock her over.
The bell rang, signaling that lunch was now over.
"Shall we?" Rosalie said as she stood.
"So, what does the new one think of us?" Emmett asked as we walked to the hallway.
I shrugged. He didn't care enough to press for more information. And I shouldn't care either.
I walked towards my junior biology class. I was playing a junior, along with Alice. Jasper, Rosalie and Emmett were all pretending to be seniors. We like starting at the youngest age possible, so we can stay in one area longer.
When I walked into Biology, Bella was standing at the teacher's desk giving him her slip for him to sign. Poor girl. There was only one open seat left, and it was at my table. People had been reluctant to sit with me when I first moved here.
Mr. Banner signed the paper and Bella turned to come sit down. As she turned, the fan blew her hair out.
A scent hit me like a wrecking ball. My body automatically tensed up and I had to fight back the urge to attack her. She pulled the chair back noisily and sat. I scooted my chair as far away from her as possible.
Holy shit. She smelt amazing. Her scent was scorching my throat like hell fire. All I wanted to do was grab her and sink my fangs into her neck. The monster in me raged, begging me to attack her and drain her of her blood.
I cant. I cant do it. What about my family? If I killed this innocent girl, we'd have to move again. It wasn't fair. I was the one who preached beside Carlisle, reminding everyone else how important it was to fight the urges.
And now here I was, barely able to fight against my own self.
I needed to get out of this room. I had to leave or else I'd kill her then I'd be forced to kill everyone in the classroom. I couldn't do that. I can't kill all these innocents. If I did, then I'd lose who I was forever. I'd never be able to get it back.
She leaned back in her seat and flipped her long brown hair. The fire burned. God damn her! Was she trying to entice the monster within me? Did she have a death wish?
My will broke. I had to kill her. I needed her blood. I couldn't fight this monster.
But I couldn't do it here. I couldn't kill everyone in this classroom. I would wait. It would be better that way. Then no one else would have to suffer from my nature. I'd fight it. I'd fight this monster long enough to get out of this classroom.
I stood abruptly and ran out. My hand covering my nose and mouth, so it looked as if I were just leaving because of a sickness. Mr. Banner called my name but didn't pursue me. I escaped to my car.
I took several deep breaths, trying my hardest to clear my mind of her damning scent. It lingered. The burn still scorching my throat. My hands gripped the wheel tightly, the leather under my hands slowly starting to break.
I had to get it under control. I had to control it long enough to get away. Long enough to… long enough to give into my monster.
The final bell rang, and everyone left the school building. Alice was the first one to my car, her eyes wide with worry. She had already seen what was coming. She was worried and frightened, but she didn't say anything as she got into the car.
The others arrived and were just as worried. Alice probably told them something but didn't elaborate. She'd tell them the rest later.
I sped off, going at dangerous speeds that I usually saved when I wasn't at risk of being seen. I didn't care now. I just had to drop the others off.
"Edward," Alice said softly, her hand on my arm.
I gripped the steering wheel harder, unable to answer her calmly.
Two visions were in circulating around in her head. The first was me, eyes bright red, blood dripping from my mouth. The second was again of me, but I was in the Swan's house, sneaking in the shadows and slowly stalking Bella. She had her back to me, I was letting her scent pull me in.
"Stop," I moaned loudly.
"Sorry," She whispered, then began rubbing her temples as if she had a headache.
"Ed, is everything okay?" Emmett asked, his hand on my shoulder.
I shook him off, "I'm just going to apologize in advance. I'm sorry, I wish I could be stronger."
"Edward, just get out here I'll drive your car home. We forgive you." Alice said.
I skidded to a stop, and got out of the car, speeding through the woods and not looking back. I knew where I was heading. I didn't have to think about the direction. I knew this entire town better than the people who had been living here since their birth.
Chief Swan lived in a small two-bedroom home that resided somewhat hidden by the thick trees that surrounded it. I stood by the shed that was between two trees. Isabella had just pulled into the driveway in her old red truck.
She hummed as she walked into the house, her fingers rubbing through her hair. I swallowed back a growl as her scent hit me again. She unlocked the door and walked into the house.
I latched onto the second story wall and opened the window. It was to her bedroom. I looked around at all of her stuff. I tried not to soak it in. I knew that after this, I was going to feel terrible. It'd be something that would forever haunt me.
I took a deep breath and let her scent turn me back into a heartless monster. She was in the kitchen. I followed her scent, silently creeping down the stairs.
She was standing in the kitchen, cutting something on the cutting board. She was humming to herself. She didn't notice me standing behind her.
I didn't want her to suffer. I'd kill her quickly. I jumped forward and twisted her neck. It snapped and she was dead before she even realized what happened. Her body slumped into my arms. Quickly, I sunk my teeth into her neck.
Her blood flowed into my mouth. I rolled my eyes at the sensation. It'd been so long before I had had human blood. Her blood soothed the burning in my throat. I wanted to savor the flavor of her blood, but I couldn't control myself long enough to slow it down.
Once her body was drained, the monster within me shrunk down again. I stared at her lifeless body. I sighed heavily, the guilt crashing over me.
"I'm so sorry," I whispered as I walked through the woods, "I wish I could control myself. I'm so sorry. I promise that I will do my best to look after your father and mother and hopefully ease their suffering."
I found a field that was rarely visited. It was a beautiful field I frequented; high up in the mountains, so high that the sun was able to break through the clouds and shine down. The flowers seemed to always be in bloom. It was a perfect spot for a grave.
I laid her body to the side and began to dig. I was careful with my digging, not tearing up the top soil so it didn't look as if there was a body buried here.
Once the hole was deep enough, I gingerly placed her body in it. I should've gotten a blanket to wrap her up in. I stroked her cheek gently before covering her with the dirt. I carefully put the top dirt over the grave.
I stood and looked down at where she was buried. I bowed my head in respect and clasped my hands together.
"I'm sorry for the monster that I am. I'm sorry, that you won't be able to grow and enjoy your life. I promise, that I will come back every year, on this day, and say a few words of kindness, in honor of you." I said.
"Kind words, my son," A voice said from the woods.
I looked over to see my 'father,' stepped from the darkness of the trees. I looked away from him, to ashamed to face him. He was beside me in an instant, his hand on my shoulder.
"Son, it's alright."
"No, it's not." I said sullenly.
"It will be," he said firmly, "I don't want you to wallow in your guilt for all eternity. It's in our nature. It's an unfortunate part of who we are. And you're not the only one who has had a lapse in control."
I sighed, shaking my head, "I-I wish I could've fought it."
"Sometimes, there are things we just can't fight. But you've been 'clean' for the better part of fifty years. I think one relapse in that time period isn't anything to major. We'll get you right back onto the wagon."
I nodded, "I hope the others can forgive me. They'll certainly be angry. This place is the closest we get to being normal."
"They'll forgive you. You've moved several times without complaint for their mistakes. And if they do complain, I'll remind them of that."
I chuckled, "Thanks. Let's go home."
We ran home. The others were in the living room, waiting for us. My mother stood and wrapped me in a tight hug.
"It'll be alright, Edward." She whispered gently.
I gave her back a quick rub, "I know. Thanks mom."
She smiled and sat back down in her place, Carlisle sitting beside her. I did my hardest to push the other's thoughts out of my head. I wasn't in the mood for their inner feelings on my mistake.
"We're going to have to move again. I'm thinking we should move closer to Alaska, where Eleazar and his family are. The town they live in closely resembles Forks."
Rosalie sighed heavily, but otherwise kept her mouth shut. She would be annoyed, but I know she wouldn't say anything. Esme had probably forbidden the others from saying anything to me about it.
"I think we should give it a month before we leave, so it doesn't seem suspicious when we leave." Carlisle said.
"I'm so sorry everyone." I said as I stood and retreated to my room.
The Next Day
The chatter around school was normal. Perhaps the word hadn't spread about Bella's disappearance. Or maybe Charlie was out on his own, looking for her. As we sat at the lunch table, I listened for any suspicious inner voices.
"Uh, hey Ed, you said you killed that girl?" Emmett whispered.
"Yeah, don't remind me."
"Isn't that her? Walking in?" He said, his eyes locked on the door.
We all turned and sure enough, Isabella Swan was walking through the door. She smiled at us, then dismissively flicked her hair in our direction.
What do you think? Bella came back to life! Surprise! Do you have any ideas as to how she came back? Comment and let me know! See you on Sunday!
