She was back. After everything, she was there, in the office. He didn't know what to do; everyone had left and it was just him and Kono in the headquarters. He wanted to talk to her, but he wasn't sure what to say or do. He wasn't there for her but she had lied to him. He was relieved that she was back but was also angry. The others had talked to her, but he only said few words and left to his office. He knew he would have to talk to her sooner or later, but what he would say?
He looked at her office and she was sit, writing something, and she looked very calm. He didn't know why she had stayed, she should be home by now, but she had. Maybe she wanted to talk to him too? Yeah, maybe…but he was going to be the first to ask the questions; he was the boss after all.
Steve got up and went straight to Kono's office. He didn't even knock on door, he opened and entered. He waited until she looked right at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I wanted to, Steve. I really wanted, but I couldn't!"
"I thought you trusted me…"
"I trust you! Please, don't do that…"
"Do what?"
"Make me feel guiltier than I already do."
"I'm not…I'm just sad. I was worried about you."
"I'm sorry…"
"Stop saying that you are sorry! I could've lost you! I can't imagine my life without you!"
Kono was surprised by his last words. She couldn't manage to say coherent words.
"What…wait…since when…I mean, what?"
Steve was taken aback by her lack of sense and thought that Kono didn't feel the same way he did.
"Just forget everything I just said, ok?"
Kono couldn't do it. She needed to know the truth. It was now or never.
"No. What do you mean, Steve? Tell me."
She got closer to him, as a way to make him feel more pressured, but she wasn't sure if her gesture would work, but at least she had to give it a shot.
Steve started to feel the tension when she got closer. He was already nervous, and now he didn't know if he could control how he felt towards her. He just wanted to grab her and kiss her, tell that he was relieved that she was alright and that he would never lose her again, but he was scared. She was a mystery to him; he weren't able to figure out how she felt. Now, she was just pushing him, but he didn't know the reason. He was afraid to find out. If she didn't correspond his feelings, things could get very awkward on the job, but if she did…Well, he couldn't wait any longer; he had to find out, it was now or never.
"I mean this –"
And he kissed her very gently. He wanted to go forever and deepen the kiss, but he needed to know her response. He tried to break the kiss but Kono didn't let him; she moved closer to him and put her arms around his neck, not letting him get away from her.
They broke the kiss when they needed air. Steve looked down at Kono and she was looking at the ground, biting her lower lip. He smiled at her not usual image.
"You know boss, I thought you never noticed me before. I guess I was wrong."
"You were so wrong, Kalakaua."
He planted a kiss on her lips, turned and put his arms around her waist.
"Let's go home."
"No, I'm already home."
