Ryuk laughed, rough and loud.
He'd stood in the shadows as Light spoke to L. As Light fought with L. As Light realized he loved L.
He knew what it meant to "keep your enemies close", but this...
This was a bit of an overkill, even for someone as dramatic as his human. Ryuk had come to care for the little guy, in a sick, twisted sort of way. An "amuse me or die" sort of way. An "I'll kill you as soon as things get boring" sort of way.
To be honest, he'd expected Light to last longer than this. The teenager was smart, talented, and sly as a fox. He was quick-witted and resourceful, always three steps ahead of himself. But then...
Oh how the tables had turned on that poor Yagami boy. He met another human, one just like himself. Lawliet. The man that seemed sofragile, yet had broken hundreds of men. Childish, selfish, intelligent, and terrified by the thought that he might die. Exactly like Light.
Ryuk smiled, remembering how he'd come back to find Light. Acting out the part of a grief-stricken friend. As usual, the act was flawless. Just a bit too perfect. Yet no one ever thought to question the teenager. Nothing looks wrong, he's alright. But Ryuk'd seen the way his human really was. The way the young man would mutter to himself over who to kill and when. Over who he could use to avoid capture and pin the blame on someone else.
The shinigami laughed again, closing his notebook. Light Yagami was out of time, now.
Humans truly were interesting.
