A/N: This is not a happy fic. Be warned. I felt the need to write this. Ever been betrayed? It's horrible, isn't it? I know.

The birds that always circled about Elizabeth's quarters were beautiful. They always calmed her when she had a rough day. She could listen to their wings flapping and the sun reflecting off their beautiful feathers for hours. But, today she envies them.
Because today, Elizabeth couldn't feel any more miserable.
She couldn't believe it; she thought if she just ignored it… if she just pretended that everything was fine…
Well, she supposes all the signs were there. A few months into their relationship, John became unusually distant. He didn't spend as much time with her as he used to, and when he did she could tell he was only partly there. He would only sort of listen to her, and he didn't talk very much, making for a very one-sided conversation.
She tried to ignore it. She figured he was just having a rough time after a mission and that it would pass with time. Deciding not to get worked up over what was probably nothing, she went on as though everything were normal.
She couldn't have been more wrong. A few weeks later she noticed him making googly-eyes at one of the Daedalus crew. One of the scientists. But she ignored it. 'It's John,' she thought. 'He isn't doing anything. You're just being stupid, everything is fine.'
So she went on with her daily activities and refused to think that she was losing John. She couldn't lose John. He was her life. He was her best friend, the one she went to when she was happy or sad or when she wanted to talk. He was also her lover.
He started to grow even more distant. He barely had any time for her, and stopped trying to make her happy. She was the only one making any effort and she could no longer ignore that something was wrong.
She went to confront him about it a few weeks ago. That had been a mistake, because he'd been lying in bed with someone else.
He hadn't chased after her after she'd bolted from the room. In fact, he hasn't spoken to her at all since then. He hasn't tried to apologize, or even explain himself. Somehow that hurts most of all.
She should have known he'd leave her. She wasn't his type, and he didn't stay with one person for too long. He was the 'love 'em and leave 'em' type, and she'd been foolish enough to think he would be different with her.
She had been wrong. She wonders how long she'll keep paying for it.
She looks back out the window at the birds flying around her balcony. Yes, today she envies them. They're beautiful with their graceful movements and bright colors. They are so peaceful. So calming. So pure.
She wishes she could fly away. Maybe then she would be whole again.
