I don't own any characters or names from the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth.
Tobias POV:
I am literally freaking out. I'm sitting at the chair behind my mother's desk, waiting for her so that I can give her the memory serum.
Part of me wants to give it to her, to erase her entire being. I'll have a new mother.
But part of me doesn't want to lose the only friend I had who understood what it was like to be abused.
My thoughts are interrupted as she bursts through the door. She dashed to my side and wrapped me in an unexpected embrace. "Tobias," she whispered, "you've returned to me."
"No," I tell her, "I've only come to give you this." I handed her the vial of memory serum. "It will erase your memory, and end this war, once and for all. Please, Mother, drink it."
"N-no! I won't drink that Tobias," she shoved me away, the vial still in her hand. "Guards!" Two factionless armed with knives barged through the door and restrained me. "Thank you for bringing this to me Tobias. I know just what to do with it." She opened a drawer and pulled out a syringe.
"Who are you going to inject that with?" I asked, a feeling of dread creeping through my veins. The look in her eyes…what is she planning? She locked her eyes on me, causing me to flinch. I knew that look.
She had the same look in her eyes as Jeanine Matthews did when she was about to inject me with mind control serum.
I started to struggle when she approached me, but soon stopped as one of the guards put his knife to my throat.
"Now we can start over, Tobias. You'll be the good little boy who does everything I say," she whispered, with a demented smile on her face.
"Mother! No! Not this way! I-I'll stay with you! I promise!" I desperately begged. This couldn't happen. Tris was going to be waiting for me when I returned to the compound. I couldn't let her wait forever.
I gritted my teeth and used all my strength to slam my elbow into the factionless guard behind me. The surprised man stumbled back, and fell against the bookcase against the wall. I grabbed the hand of the other guard, directing the knife in his hand into his own arm. My mother called in more guards to apprehend me. They flooded into the small room like water.
I fought off as many as I could, and grabbed a gun from one of the factionless. After the last guard had fallen, I pointed the gun at my mother. She no longer held the syringe, it was on the floor a few feet in front of her.
"I don't want to hurt you, mother," I whispered, tears blurring my vision.
"You'll have to, Tobias, if you ever want to return to your little girlfriend," she said. The look in her eyes confirmed it.
I bolted for the doorway as quickly as possible, glancing back only briefly to see my mother lunge for the syringe. I didn't care, I just wanted to get out of her and get back to Tris.
I fought off any factionless that got in my way, and finally made it to the exit. I shoved the doors open and sprinted down the street, but I was stopped by an unusually large factionless man. He restrained me with great force, far too strong for me to escape.
My mother walked outside, syringe in hand. She stopped a foot from me. "I'm sorry Tobias. I just want my son back."
The last thing I ever felt as the true Tobias Eaton was the sting of the syringe's needle as it plunged memory serum into my neck. Then everything went black forever.
