CHAPTER 1
"Great," Nat moaned, "We've got triple transfiguration next with Mrs Vass!"
"And we have triple potions tomorrow morning with Mrs. McAllister!" Jennie added.
"And we have so much homework to do," Heawood reminded them, "so can we hurry up and go to transfiguration?"
"I mean, transfiguration could be really interesting if we actually did anything," Jennie continued as they walked down the corridor.
"Yeah, why do we have to keep doing all of this boring theory stuff?" Nat asked.
"Because if we don't learn it then it could be dangerous," Heawood replied simply, "we might turn someone into something dreadful,"
"It wouldn't be so bad," Jennie smiled, "if I accidentally turned Mrs Vass in to a hippo, but I suppose that there wouldn't be much left to do..."
"Jen!" Nat cried, "They say that she can apparate, and hear everything we say!"
Jennie snorted. "Don't be silly," she said, "You and Heawood are always telling me that you can't apparate inside the school grounds,"
"Yeah, but she can still put that hearing charm on the walls," Heawood informed them, "and I reckon that Mrs Tuck has everything we say recorded somehow,"
"Ok, whatever," Jennie said, waving her hand and trying to dismiss the subject, "are we late yet?"
"No, but we have to go the other way, that corridor is forbidden if you care to remember," Nat scoffed. "Have you done that reading homework?"
"No," Heawood replied and Jennie shook her head.
Nat laughed, "You two are going to fail your O.W.L's if you don't start doing your homework!"
"Actually, Nat, we do do our homework, we just don't have time to do some of it," Heawood said.
Suddenly a pale figure glided through one of the walls. Nat gave a little scream and jumped backwards, landing on Jennie's foot. Heawood had side-stepped, as she knew that Nat always jumped when she saw one of the ghosts.
"Hello," Heawood said politely.
"How are you?" Nat asked the ghost, recovering from the shock.
"Fine thank you," the ghost of Lady Dalia replied, staring down her long nose to look at them. They had forgotten to call her ma'am. But she decided to let them off just this once. "Shouldn't you three be in a lesson?"
"Yeah, we're going to transfiguration," Jennie said.
Lady Dalia glared at Jennie. She had to say something to these rude girls! Finally she snapped, "When you are talking to some-one of a higher rank than you, it is courtesy to address them in their preferred title. A Lady never says that dreadful lazy word," She shuddered before she said it, "'yeah' she always says, 'yes'. And you two..." she said rounding on Nat and Heawood, "didn't address me as ma'am or Lady Dalia either. Honestly, the manners have definitely fallen since I taught here..."
Then she glided off, muttering under her breath.
"When you are talking to some-one of a higher rank than you..." Jennie imitated the Lady Dalia, "I mean, come on, she's dead! Does that make her a higher rank than us?"
"No," Heawood agreed readily, "but it does mean that we're late for transfiguration!"
