So you're not confused: This was based off of Baxter Day, from the 2000 'Arthur's Christmas' show. Buster wishes Christmas wasn't such a big deal, so creates Baxter Day. I got most of the fantasy elements from the song about Baxter Day in the show. I've never written an Arthur fic before; but it was my favorite show as a kid and I figured I write it for my sister. =)
"Buster, wake up! It's Baxter Day!" Buster's mother's voice woke him on July 25th, better known as 'Baxter Day' to the Baxter family. With exactly 6 months until Christmas, Baxter Day was the exact opposite of Christmas. Instead of fancy brunches and Penguins on Ice, they read joke books and stayed in pajamas all day.
But of course, what was Baxter Day without a tour of the galaxy? They hopped into their rocket ride in flannel pajamas hidden under robes and slippers. Up, into outer space, that held all the creations of Buster's fantasies. There were aliens and cherry pie. No black suits, baths, or brunches.
Buster's mother allowed him to steer. There was no speed limit in space.
They first went to the Moon.
"Come on, Mom!" Buster bounded onto the crater-studded surface. He plunged his hand into the land and brought out a gooey, green morsel. He stuffed it in his mouth. "It really is cheese!" he cried.
His mom bent down to try a scoop. "Mmm... it's a cross between cheddar and gorgonzola, I think.
"More like parmesan," Buster corrected. He ran back towards the space ship. "Come on! There's a lot more!"
He flew them past planets of purple slime monsters and across the horizon of an ice cream sea. He looped around the solar system, and landed back at Elwood City around noon. All his friends were there to meet him as he expertly parked in the mall's parking lot.
"Where to now?" His Mom asked.
"The library!" Buster took off at a run, never lagging. They were going to read every joke book the library had while feasting on cherry pie. In their pajamas. And no one minded, because it was Baxter Day.
"This one's my favorite!" Buster plucked the top book from a huge stack. "What has three eyes, and smiles a lot? I dunno, but it's crawling on your face!" He and his mother burst into peals of laughter at the strange joke. Two hands emerged from the book and slapped pie into their faces. A purple slime monster promptly followed, licking up the mess.
A few hours later, the joke books were done. Buster's sides hurt. "I need a snack," he said wistfully. "Or five."
A line of food abruptly appeared above their heads. Buster grabbed cake and hamburgers from it. The line multiplied, adding Boston cream pie to the selection. Buster's eyes grew wide with delight as the biggest cream pie of all rolled down the line. He sprang into it, the sweet flavor filling his mouth…
"Buster, sweetheart!" His mother shook him awake. "I let you sleep late; Happy Baxter Day!"
"Huh?" Buster grunted sleepily. "It was already Baxter Day, I was going to jump into a pie-"
"Happy Baxter Day, Buster!" A familiar voice called. Buster's father appeared in the doorway.
"Dad!" Buster exclaimed. "You made it! Happy Baxter Day!"
