I sleepily opened an eye then yawned loudly, stretching my wings and nearly cuffing Harry on the head.
I'm Hedwig; this is my story…

I heard a bell ring as the door opened, letting in a gust of cold air.
"Where are you going to get the money for one, Ron?" a girl's voice questioned.
"Er, I dunno, I'm just looking," a tall, freckled boy lazily replied.
"Well I want a Snowy," a small redheaded girl piped up. I sat up; I was a Snowy. "And it has to be white or black."
"Why? So you can name it Chess?" A black haired boy teased. There was an awful scar on his forehead; it looked like a lightning bolt.
"No," the younger girl said indignantly, "That's Ron, the chess maniac.
"Am not. Your just jealous 'cause you're not good at it." The boy named Ron shot back.
"Am not!"
"Are too!"
"Not!"
"Too!"
"Cut it out you two; Ron, try to grow up." The older girl said, interrupting. I hoped she wasn't going to buy me, she sounded too bossy.
"Come on, let's look at the owls, ya know, what we really came here for," the other boy said.
"Let's leave them to their arguing, Harry, we can browse by ourselves," the girl said softly, taking Harry's arm.

Finally, after what seemed ages, the happy group came over to my cage.
"Oh, isn't she so adorable?" the girl, Ginny, squealed.
"Yeah," Harry said dreamily, staring into my leaf-green eyes; she is sweet, isn't she?"
"Too bad, Harry, I'm taking her," Ginny said, taking the little card with my name, age, and code.
"Aw, Ginny, don't be rude," Ron said glancing at Harry's shock-stricken face.
"I'm sure Harry will be all right. He needs some pain you know, otherwise he'll get weak," Hermione scolded.
"You're not helping my crisis, Hermione," Harry said, still staring at my face.
"Well too bad," Hermione shot back, evenly.
Ginny, meanwhile, was paying for me at the counter. A man came over and picked up my cage. He put me in a little wagon that came free with the owl.
"Well I guess I'll take this one," Harry said gloomily, taking my next-door-neighbor, Errol.
"Harry, you can get one somewhere else you know," said Hermione, finally worried about Harry's health.
"No, I'll just get this one."
Once outside, Ginny told Harry some heart-leaping news.
"Harry, I want you to have Hedwig-" she said.
"Oh, but what about Errol?" he interrupted excitedly.
"As long as I get Errol," Ginny finished.
"Oh thanks!" Harry said. He took my cage, and let me out. I flew in circles around his head, then, landed on his shoulder. I pecked contentedly on his ear the whole way home.
I'm Hedwig; this is my story…
