Dream
He jumped awake, breathing heavily. He could hear people muttering in scared, panicked voices. They sounded higher than usual, less controlled, and he remembered he had decided to ride in the children's compartments.'
'I was looking for Ron –' said a girl who sounded younger than the rest, her voice quivering.
'Come in and sit down -' said a second girl. She sounded frazzled, though spoke calmly and kindly to the obviously younger girl.
There was a shuffling as the first girl searched for a seat.
'Not here!' His head whipped in the direction the voice had come from, his breath catching in his throat – it couldn't be. 'I'm here!'
'Ouch!' came another boy's voice, squeaky and loud.
He sat up straight, cupping his hand and pressing the tip of his wand into it. 'Quiet!'
The pale flame that appeared in his hand illuminated the compartment, lighting up the nervous faces of five children, the smallest looking like a first year or a very small second year and the others no older than thirteen.
A tiny red-headed girl was huddled in the corner, her hand creeping to a boy's with a long nose and the same flaming hair, sitting a few seats away from his sister. A round faced boy with large, blinking eyes was peering back at him. A girl with a huge bush of mousy hair was looking curiously at him.
But he didn't take notice of these children. His eyes were fixed on someone very different.
James Potter stared back at him, frowning. He shook slightly, though the children appeared not to notice. Perhaps he was dreaming, perhaps he had gone mad; he didn't know. But what he did know was that his best friend was staring up at him, no older than he was when he mastered his transformation.
He tilted his head, surveying the boy more severely. There was something wrong about him, something different. His nose didn't look as long, but that must have be a trick of the faint light, and there was an odd cut on his forehead, but knowing James that was no surprise. But no – there was something.
He leant forward an inch, peering closer. And then, stifling a cry, he saw what was different.
The beautiful bright green eyes he had admired so much were staring back at him, and his life fell back into place.
He straightened up, forcing his voice level. 'Stay where you are.' He jumped to his feet, heading for the door. He needed time to think.
But as he reached it, the door slid open, and a cold rushed over him. Glancing at his best friend's son, he could predict what would happen next.
Good scene from a good book. Review thanks, thank you for reading! x
