The Vikings called their alphabet runes. Each symbol represents a different sound. Many people thought that the runes had magical powers. Some believe if they wrote runes on their swords and weapons the magic would protect them in battle.

The names of the Viking gods and goddesses are Odin, Frey, Thor and Freya. Each day of the week was named after a god such as Thursday: Thor, Tuesday: Tiw, Friday: Freya and Wednesday: Odin.

The Vikings cremated their dead so that the Viking would make it to the afterlife. They put a person's body/remains in a boat so they would make it to the afterlife.

The word Viking comes from the word vik which means lurk in the bay.

The most popular Viking god was Thor because he had the qualities Vikings thought were most important strength and determination.
