It was a simple, average day for David Sinclair and Colby Granger. They were sent by Don to pick up a witness for a case. The man was a computer geek who lived in a modest apartment building. Everything was going fine until they got to the man's door, which happened to be ominously left cracked open. Muttering under his breath, David pulled out his gun just in case; Colby did the same, only without the muttering.
"Marcus Johnson! FBI!" David hollered into the apartment. From inside he heard several people whisper to each other and some muffled giggles. With a nod to Colby, they burst into the apartment screaming, "FBI!"
As soon as they were inside the door, the lights came on, temporarily blinding them both. About a dozen shadows jumped out of the various hiding places shouting, "Surprise!" David and Colby's reflexes kicked in.
It was mostly luck that caused the bullets to uncharacteristically land in walls instead of startled surprise-birthday-party guests. Almost as soon as they fired, David and Colby realize what was going on and lowered their weapons. Several party guests were on the floor whimpering, and the rest where mostly frozen in place except for the few that had barely crouched down.
David pulled out his badge and showed it to the guests. "I'm Agent David Sinclair from the FBI, and this is Agent Colby Granger. We're looking for Marcus Johnson. Does anyone know where he is?" He was serious and down to business.
"Marcus?" one of the guests questioned. "Dude, you've got the wrong apartment. He's up one floor." He seemed to be the least shaken out of the guests, but he was still badly shocked.
For a moment, embarrassment welled up in David. He pulled out the card and handed it to the guest. "Sorry about that," he said as he and Colby backed out the apartment. "If you wish to make a complaint, just call the number on the back. Sorry about the inconvenience."
Once they were back in the hall, the two headed back towards the stairs silently. As they started up the stairs, Colby commented, "Well, that was a first." Later, they shared a laugh over it.
