Hey people of the world :) This is my story transferred from my old account and with a new title :D so no, I didn't steal it :( Hope you enjoy it and let me know what you think :)
It was the eyes that did it.
The moment that he looked up to become locked in a fierce staring contest with those eyes, Dick knew that he wouldn't - couldn't - be the cocky crime fighter, donning the smug grin with the ever present intimidating cackle in this battle. The previous confidence he had taken for granted melted away like an icicle in an oven, leaving him instead, with a dreadful hollowness which left him with the stench of futility. It was just...
Those eyes...
The pale grey of the irises which one usually associates with a mysterious beauty, had been mutated into something that Dick could only liken with hopelessness. For just a second, as they glanced over him, in what first appeared to be confusion, Dick almost felt a sense of pity for this poor, lost beggar who, probably through misfortune and misery had been forced into a life of crime. But he was given only a moment to consider this as those captivating eyes soon became hard and angry, piercing through him with more ease than a knife. Those eyes warned more clearly than a snake's bright colours, that this man was dangerous. It was that deadly combination that one sees in a beast trapped in a corner: panic and adrenaline.
When he lunged, Dick watched with experience, how the man flailed his dagger in jerky, frantic swings. How he was silently accepting that he was going to be caught. To be sent to prison. To be finished.
And he didn't like it.
Those previously dull, empty eyes now became light again and it sickened Dick to the core that the the man now had such a sense of vitality when faced with a new goal:
He was not going down alone.
And those eyes.
Those eyes watched him. Watched him throw punches and dodge kicks. Watched him dive out of the pathway of the blade. Watched him when Batman arrived to finish the job as he called the police. Watched him from the back of the police car.
Those eyes promised something...
And whether is was revenge, punishment or death, Dick would never know. Oh, but he would remember. He would never be able to cast out of his mind, the horrifying image of
those eyes.
