...

Penelope startled at a gentle tap-tap on her shoulder. She pulled her cheek quickly away from Kevin's and turned her head, taking in Dave's soft expression, his lips barely quirked in a smile.

"Mind if I have this dance?"

Penelope blinked as Kevin's hand slipped from her waist and his hand slid from hers. She cast her eyes around the dance floor, seeing everyone mingling and switching dance partners. It wasn't until the soothing melody of a new song began that Penelope realized the song she and Kevin had started dancing to was long over.

"Garcia?" Dave prompted kindly, his hand reaching out palm up. With a quick glance at Kevin, who had stepped back with an uncomfortable expression, she shook her head to clear it and grasped Dave's offered hand.

Dave settled his hand around Penelope's waist, tugging her close. They easily fell into the rhythm of the song, Dave leading them around their corner of the dance floor. Penelope gazed over Dave's shoulder, watching Kevin dancing with his date. She sighed shakily.

"You okay?" Dave asked, his lips close to her ear. Penelope started again, pulling back to look at the man.

"I'm fine," she answered quickly, nervously. She shifted her gaze away from his inquiring and understanding eyes. Dave tugged her close again. With another half-turn, Dave effectively blocked her view.

"It's okay to miss him."

Penelope didn't say anything, just pressed her cheek against Dave's. He squeezed her hand.

"He doesn't want me," she whispered sadly moments later. Dave led her in a turn, making eye contact when she was back in his arms.

"No, he wanted you," Dave asserted. "He just didn't want to wait for you."

"He shouldn't have to."

Dave sighed. He coaxed her hand to his chest, slipping his fingers from her grasp so he could cup her cheek. Penelope's eyes widened, shining.

"Any man worth his salt would wait eternity for you."

Penelope huffed in disbelief, but a small smile graced her lips before she blinked and ducked her head. Dave pressed a tender kiss to her forehead.

Dave took her hand again a moment later, and led them around the floor in an elaborate waltz sequence that had everyone clapping. Penelope laughed and when they settled back into a gentle sway, she rested her head on Dave's shoulder.

"You're so good to me," Penelope said wistfully. "Why is that?"

"Kitten, you deserve to be treated like royalty."

Penelope lifted her head, a smirk forming.

"Does that mean you have to do whatever I tell you?"

Dave's laughter echoed around the spacious yard as he twirled her one last time and the song ended.
