Red

She struggled to go home.

She had heard what they said, and yet she still defended herself, and him. They beat, tortured, and broke her for it. They told her she was worthless, not only in their eyes, but in his. He was all who mattered to her. She needed him to survive. But her thoughts gave in after many attempts of denying what they had said, shouted, sneered, so many times in front of her own face.

Her hair was in tangles, her clothes were tattered. Her body and face looked awful, while smeared with her favorite color from her own self. With all her broken bones and oozing wounds she carried herself someplace out of that alley, just away from the town, away from the world. The pain of her wounds did not compare for the ache and suffering in her heart now.

Oh how she wanted to go back and see him again, and have him hold her in his arms and whisper reassuring phrases to her under the soft glow of the moonlight, like they had so many times before. But she couldn't see him like this, after what had happened. She had to keep him safe.

Half of her heart was trying to break away, while the other half clung on to all of those happy memories. If she could not believe or trust herself anymore, then whom should she believe now?

Slower and slower she moved forward, her vision more blurred with every second that went by, until she could bare no more and collapsed. She didn't know where she was, she didn't even know who she was anymore.

One more time she looked at the world, and she heard something. She couldn't make it out. She tasted her own blood. She felt warmth of tears hitting her bloodied and bruised face. And then, she saw Him.

She saw red.
