"I cannot believe we just did that."
Ambertail stared at Dustgorse. The gray-brown tom looked into her wide amber eyes. "Me neither." He paused. "Wasn't it great?"
Ambertail stared open-mouthed at him. "No!" she yelled in horror. "Now I'll have to explain everything to Hazelgaze!"
"Will you?" Dustgorse countered, wiggling his eyebrows.
Ambertail frowned at him. "This isn't a joke! What will my kits say? What will Hazelgaze say when he finds out I'm expecting kits again?"
"Just try having kits with him again," Dustgorse said, licking his flank. "Then he won't suspect anything."
"But what if he says he doesn't have time?" Ambertail fretted, her fur starting to lift. How could Dustgorse be so stupid?! She already had kits. What would they say?
"Well, the best we can do is pretend you did, and if he asks, ask him, 'you don't remember?'"
Ambertail growled. "You're lucky you're the same color as him. Otherwise that'd be a big disaster."
"It's a good thing we have the same eye color." Dustgorse sat up. "We need to get back before he starts suspecting anything, anyways."
Ambertail nodded, eyes gleaming with amusement as she thought that was the first logical thing he'd said today.
So they headed back to camp. When both of them slipped into the warriors' den where Hazelgaze was waiting. He ran over to Ambertail and licked her ears. "Where have you been all night?!" he wailed. "I was cold without you to warm me up."
Ambertail flicked her tail to the fresh-kill pile. "Night hunting."
"Sorry we were gone so long," Dustgorse added.
Hazelgaze narrowed his eyes. "You were night hunting with him?"
Ambertail gulped, and nodded.
"All night long?"
"Er... Yes,"she mewed quietly.
Hazelgaze stared her in the eye. "Okay," he said, not sounding convinced.
Ambertail and Dustgorse ducked out of the warriors' den.
Ambertail didn't wait to start. "I think he's already figured it out!" she whispered.
