Jack picked up the red Telly Tubby Sara's dad had given Charlie for his first birthday and debated on the best way to dispose of the wretched thing without his son finding out. While Charlie had never seen the show -and never would if Jack had anything to say about it- he was extremely attached to the strange looking toy.
Jack, on the other hand, had seen part of the show. Once. It was an experience he never intended to repeat. It was, by far, the most mind numbing show he'd ever seen. The evil-baby-face-in-the-sun was freaky, even worse than Barney. The fact that the dang toy actually talked when you pressed its hand made it that much more annoying. He was glad Charlie hadn't figured out how to make it talk. Not yet anyway.
Scrapping dried bits of snot off of its left eyeball, Jack decided not to risk his kid's wrath -for a fourteen month old the kid had a nasty temper- and tossed the beloved toy into the toy box. A plastic rainbow colored slinky, several cloth blocks and a few bulky plastic dinosaurs followed it. In no time, the playroom was clean. That done, he decided to check on Charlie before heading to the kitchen to clean up there. Peaking his head into the boy's room, he saw that Charlie was still sound asleep in his crib. He watched his son sleep for a few minutes then headed for the kitchen.
Sara was already in the kitchen scrapping bits of left over hot dog and mac-and-cheese into the garbage. Silently, Jack snuck up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. Surprised, she nearly dropped the plate into the garbage can.
"Punk," Sara admonished as she playfully slapped Jack. "If you had made me drop this plate, you'd have been the one fishing it out of the trash.
Smiling, he ignored the remark and said, "You don't have to do that, hun. I'll clean up the kitchen.
"I don't mind," she replied. "Besides, if we do it together it'll get done quicker and we can get a few minutes alone together before Charlie wakes up.
Jack decided he liked that idea and started cleaning off the table. Working together, the kitchen was clean in less than twenty minutes. Luckily, there hadn't been many dishes and, for once, Charlie had managed to get more food into his mouth than on the floor.
"How about we open that bottle of Chardonnay Dad gave us for our anniversary?" Sara suggested as she dried and put away the last dish.
"Sounds good to me." Jack finished rinsing out the sink and moved to the refrigerator. He pulled out the expensive bottle of wine as Sara retrieved the glasses. Finally having a few minutes to just sit and relax with his wife sounded like heaven to him. He filled the two glasses and grabbed them as Sara grabbed the baby monitor. Together they walked over to the couch and sat down, Sara snuggling up against Jack. Jack raised his glass to his lips ready to take his first sip when his son's voice came over the baby monitor.
"Da da."
Sighing, Jack stood and placed his glass on the coffee table. Giving Sara a small smile, and getting one in return, Jack wished his son would sleep for more than an hour as he went to retrieve the boy.
