Proud to be an American

I do not own The Avengers in any way.

Steve Rogers a.k.a Captain America walked thru the sea of tombstones until he rested on one. He sat down and started to talk. "This is probably the last time I'll come see you Bucky", he said, "I'm going to do what we never did. I'm going to eat junk food, watch the fireworks, and then I'm going to move on".

He stood up and kissed the top of the tombstone. He heard soft crying. He looked and saw a girl crying in front of a tombstone. He looked over her shoulder. "Who was he?" he asked.

The girl gasped and looked up. "I'm sorry sir", she said.

Steve sat next to her. "Who was he?" he repeated.

"My older brother. Killed in action", she said, "He was 21. The age I am now".

"I'm sure he's looking after you now", Steve said. He reached over and whipped the tears from her cheek. He pulled his hand back and blushed. "I'm sorry", he said, "My best friend died during World War ll".

The words left his mouth before he could stop them.

"World War ll?" the girl asked. Her eyes widened as she realized who she was talking to. "Oh my god! You're him! You're Captain America!" she gasped. She leaned forward and pecked him on the lips.

The tips of his ears turned pink and his eyes went wide.

"I don't normally go around kissing random superheroes", she said blushing.

"Capt. Steve Rogers", he introduced himself.

"Caitlyn Greenwood", she said. She stood up and said, "Come on".

Steve got up and followed her.

The park down the street was holding a picnic.

"Caitlyn!" a male voice called.

"Daddy! You'll never guess who I met today!" she said excitedly.

"And who is that Caity?" he asked.

"Daddy, this is Capt. Steve Rogers", Caitlyn said, "Capt. This is my father, Col. Greenwood".

"I must say it is an honor to meet you Capt", Col. Greenwood said.

Steve stood and saluted the man. "I only did what any good American would do Col. Greenwood", Steve said.

"At ease", Col. Greenwood said, "Caity, I'm going to go talk to some of the other officers".

Her father walked off and Caitlyn pulled Steve over to the food.

"Did people back in your era do this?" she asked, "Have 4th of July picnics?"

"Of course. Also, before every war, there would be a dance", he told her.

They sat down on a blanket and started eating.

"Did you ever go to one of these dances?" Caitlyn asked.

"No. I can't dance", Steve confessed, "Besides, I've been waiting for the right partner".

"Have you found her yet?" Caitlyn asked.

"I think…maybe I have", he said. Steve leaned back on his elbows.

Caitlyn just stared at him. She slowly leaned down and kissed him as the fireworks went off.

In that moment, he forgot about Peggy. He forgot about his best friend's death and accepted it. He praised God for the beautiful girl in his arms kissing him. He praised God that he had been frozen and hadn't died in the ice. He was proud to be the man who helped America win the war. He would go back and do it over a thousand times and never regret it. He was proud to be an American. He was probably in most proud American in the U.S.A.
