AN: A little brother moment in my Quiet Moments Series
Quite Moments Series: Because sometimes the most meaningful moments are the silent ones.
Spoilers: Sin City
Thanks to Morgan for another fantastic job betaing!
Dean stood in the doorway. Just stood. Sam always said that Dean had a problem standing still, but that was only because he preferred moving. He preferred fighting, and hunting. Things that took his whole body and mind. Things that kept him from truly thinking, because thinking was dangerous. Thinking led him to moments like this.
So, he didn't think. He just watched. He watched the slow rise and fall as air entered Sam's chest. He watched the occasional toss and turn as his brother undoubtedly struggled through something. Sam was always struggling with something, and that didn't abandon him even in his sleep.
Dean watched the tightening jaw muscles, the slight flinches of Sam's hand as he dreamed. Each movement was so familiar, and Dean let himself be lulled by that thought. Sam was familiar. Even though there were changes, even though there were moments that something came across his brother. Sam was still familiar. Whatever was happening Dean knew they would figure it out together, that he—as the big brother—would fix it and that Sam would be Sam.
But for right now as the silence rested heavily around him, Dean didn't think. He didn't think about demons, or shades of grey. He didn't think about deals or changes. He didn't think about death or torment.
In the end Sam was breathing, and somehow that had always been enough. He let that be enough, because it had to be enough. He didn't think at all.
He just watched his brother sleep.
