The Cooking Catastrophe
Annabeth ran around the kitchen like a mad woman. Percy was coming over, and she had felt the strangest urge to cook for him. Now let's understand one thing first. Annabeth doesn't cook. It's not that she can't, it's just that she isn't very good at it. She tried to treat cooking like it's a complex puzzle, when it really isn't.
Her small house was cozy and just right, set on a hill at the edge of camp. The other campers that had survived into their twenties were all nestled together next to one another. Percy's was down at the bottom of the hill, by the ocean, of course.
Several timers were ringing, the oven, the stove, and the microwave. Annabeth dashed around like her hair was on fire trying to get everything ready. She was trying to make spaghetti- easy, right? Well….
The noodles had stuck to the pan (she may have forgotten to stir). She was trying to keep the sauce from bubbling over, and Percy was due any minute.
"Styx…." Annabeth mumbled. She ran over to the fridge and grabbed out the cheese. Usually grating cheese isn't rocket science, but for this stressed daughter of Athena, right now it wasn't the easiest thing to do. In the end, she had to pick half of it out because she had caught her knuckles so many times on the edge of the grater. Percy probably wouldn't want to eat bloody cheese…
She wiped her hands on her food-splattered apron and continued grating the cheese. Finally, she was done. After looking around to see if anyone was watching, Annabeth quickly popped the nub into her mouth.
"I saw that, Wise Girl."
Annabeth whirled around to reveal a smirking Percy standing in the doorway.
"Percy!" she dropped the cheese grater, which clattered to the floor, and jumped into his arms.
Percy chuckled and kissed her lightly. She stared up at him for a few minutes until the stove started beeping at her. Grumbling, she dashed over to the sauce, which was now bubbling over, in attempt to save it. Emphasis on attempt.
While Annabeth madly worked on saving dinner, Percy glanced around at her neat little house. Well, except for the kitchen of course. The living room was just off the kitchen, and had a cute loveseat and a recliner. The far wall was stuffed with bookshelves, all perfectly organized and arranged of course. Her desk also was in the living room, off to the side. Daedalus's laptop was sitting on the desk, surrounded by neat stacks of blueprints and papers and other things that Percy didn't even want to know about.
Suddenly a loud POP! came from the oven. Annabeth jumped and ran over, throwing the door open. Smoke poured out, causing the smoke alarm to go off and filling the house. Percy raced over, pulling some water from the sink and carefully throwing it into the oven without getting Annabeth wet. Now steam was pouring out. Coughing, Annabeth grabbed an oven mitt and pulled out the pan of garlic bread. She yelped a bit from the heat and dropped it onto the counter.
Percy and Annabeth stared at the blackened toast for a few minutes.
"How about we go out for pizza?" Percy suggested. "I'll drive."
Annabeth looked up at him sheepishly, a blush spreading across her face. "Sure, that's sounds great."
