ADRENALINE
By JadeRoach
A/N: Guess what? It's Feenris Week! As you can see, today is the first day, and the first theme is…
ADRENALINE! (Tomorrow's theme is 'Crank')
Now, with that said, there's something I need to do…
OMFG TEH DISCLAIMER! (Run for life!) : Don't own anything.
The empty courtroom was calm and quiet, a great place for one to unwind.
Yet for Iris, it was for revisiting an old demon she wanted to slay, once and for all.
The court's gallery was her perch as she played back all the scenes from long ago inside her mind. The sounds, the sights, the people…it was almost too much for her to cope. Her head was spinning from all the events, and it was a miracle she barely escaped a death penalty for being an accessory to murder…
Behind her, a door slammed. She jumped slightly, muscles tense. Trying to relax, she closed her eyes and attempted to focus on what she was doing…
Footsteps, coming nearer. She could hear them clearly as she vainly attempted to ignore them. Her heart began to hammer in her ears; her body began to become taut like a bow being drawn.
Suddenly, there was a voice, calling her. "Iris?"
With a yelp, Iris whipped around, trying to see who was calling her. To her relief, Phoenix was there. He was wearing his jacket and hat, hands in his pockets.
"Are you ok?" he asked, concerned. He had never seen her as this jumpy before, not even when they were dating.
"I'm…fine…" Iris sighed, beginning to relax. Her body began to lose all of its energy as she slumped back into her seat.
"Why are you here?" Phoenix asked, taking a seat next to her.
Iris mentally snapped to action, racing for an excuse.
"Just needed to unwind, that's all…" she calmly replied, trying to look like she was only relaxing.
Phoenix cocked an eyebrow. She was lying, and she knew it, too. "Right…"
Iris decided to ignore that accusation for the moment as she mentally tried to recall what happened in the very court she was in.
All she could recall was that rush of adrenaline she had as the judge slammed his gavel down.
Phoenix was also thinking, though not about the same thing Iris was. His mind was too busy rushing around his head, putting pieces of a puzzle together.
As if by an act of God, Phoenix realized why Iris was here. "You're thinking about that case, aren't you?"
Iris had to hand it to her boyfriend; he was too good at picking up her lies. "Yeah…"
"Any thoughts on it now?"
"It's just that…I had this rush of…adrenaline…and it was so strong, too…"
"Yeah, I get that feeling…"
"You do?"
"Yeah, every time I took a case back when I had my badge."
"Wow…"
"It kept me focused throughout my career…"
Iris nodded. She decided to stay quiet. As she did, her adrenaline rush subsided.
