"What are we going to do?" Sydney asked, taking Vaughn's hand into hers.

When Jack didn't speak a reply right away, Sydney opened her mouth to say something else but closed it again when her father gestured for silence. He pulled a pen from his pocket that looked like the bug killer he'd used during their days in SD-6 when the off chance someone listening in on his conversations with Sydney could have had fatal consequences for them both. However the pen he now twisted half in his hands would kill any listening devices longer than the mere two minutes the old pen killed.

"We have four minutes," he informed them before continuing, "I see only one option to keep everyone in this room alive." Jack paused as he knew Sydney wasn't going to like this plan and he looked Vaughn straight in the eye, "We need to stage your apparent death."

"Dad, you can't be serious," Sydney said.

"I'm very serious," Jack replied, "The people who killed Vaughn's contact, who tried to kill him are very powerful. Once they've heard he survive their attempt to kill him, he will be safe no where."

"The CIA can protect him," Sydney replied, "We can take him to APO."

Jack shook his head, "Sydney, Vaughn won't be safe there either, not with our security in the present state it is in. Dean showed us that they can infiltrate APO anytime they wish." Sydney began to speak again and Jack interrupted her, "Sweetheart, if you want my grandchild to meet her father, then this is the only way."

"But –"

Vaughn lightly squeezed Sydney's hand, "He's right, Syd. They'll stop at nothing to get to me..." He took a couple of breathes before continuing, "They might even try to use you and our baby to get to me. I don't want you in danger."

Sydney nodded, and looked to her dad, "How will we do this?"

Jack explained what he had in mind, and finished just as the time on the bug killer ended. It would take a few hours to put the plan into effect and it required him to leave the hospital for a short time but he wouldn't leave before he knew they'd be safe while he was gone. He stepped out into the hallway to make a few calls and found Sydney out in the hall with him when he finished the second one.

"I'll be back as soon as I can," Jack promised and he turned to leave.

"Dad, wait," Sydney said and waited for Jack to look at her again, "How can you be so sure I'm going to have a daughter?" It felt so strange to Sydney to hear herself say those words.

"Call it intuition but when your mother was carrying you, I knew that I was going to have an extraordinary and beautiful daughter," Jack replied.

When Sydney smiled in return Jack wanted nothing more than to talk with her further about his memories of that day but as always was the case, time was working against them. He quickly clamped down tightly on the lid of that memory and said instead, "I'll return in within the hour. Stay with him."

Sydney nodded, "I will." Jack turned again to leave and she called out to him again to say simply, "Thank you."

The End
