Words were useless between them; vague and fragile, verbal communication did not suit Kevin Levin and Gwen Tennyson.
Words could lie, could break or bend. Tell half truths or lies of omission. Only the body could be reliable for the truth.
At first she hadn't understood his dislike of words, but as she did Plumber work she grew to understand.
Words could be twisted or have double meanings, verbal fine-print if you would understand that metaphor.
But physical cues were as real as one could get.
The detonation of specific nerves told them that the other was in their vicinity. Looks held whole conversations within seconds; perfectly synchronized yet unpracticed moves saved lives, many times their own. Quick caresses asked of health and mood or just told each other of the swiper's affection in a discreet way. Of course what was conversed depended upon many factors such as urgency and situation or where pressure was applied.
And in private their vocabulary increased.
Bites and nips were signs of ownership.
Licks were torture techniques.
Caresses were for both pleasure and declarations of love.
Kisses were also declarations of love and yet were also battles for dominance.
Yes, working with and loving him taught her the fragility of the spoken languages but a part of her still treasured voiced thoughts and feelings deeply.
So when he actually told her he loved her it was only natural that her heart sped up as warmth rushed to every limb.
The words had come quickly and quietly, with the usual rubbing of her arm, whispered into her ear. So quietly she had thought she had misheard but then she realized that she didn't mishear him. And so she had returned the sentiment whole-heartedly, having held back previously in knowing his distrust of words.
The ensuing kiss had sealed the deal.
Words were almost useless to them, but when used meant all the world to them.
