AN: #23 in The Great One-Shot Expulsion series. Definitely one of my favorite-favorites. Based loosely on the Matrix, but with my own little twist, I guess.

Doctors are not machines. Doctors are people, and people have emotions. People laugh and cry, love and hate. People express themselves with tears and smiles, fists and handshakes. People aren't meant to think one thought forever and ever until their bodies give out and deteriorate in wooden boxes under six feet of dirt and worms.
No.
So when he refused assimilation, we cheered. When he spat in their faces, we laughed. When they dragged him away kicking and screaming, we encouraged him to keep fighting.
And when they killed him, we rose in a mass of mourning and anger.
They would regret this sin, this foul example to keep us in line. Because we can think for ourselves, and we can breathe the air that they will never pull into their rusty, metal lungs. We can dream of things that they will never imagine. We will see what they do not.
And we will save this world that they so ruthlessly took from us. Because it was once ours, and they have no idea what its true worth is.
We will stand in his memory.
