Polite

"Oh, c'mon Rocket" Peter Quill shouts at the back of a retreating raccoon. "Can't you just be polite for once?"

"Fuck you" Rocket retorts over his shoulder, still moving away from Quill and all the remaining guests.

"Seriously?" Peter asks incredulously, using his longer stride to keep up with Rocket's fleetness of foot. "I mean, jeezus, this is important. Would it kill you to make nice?"

Rocket stops in his tracks and turns to look Peter in the eye, something lurking in the raccoon's own that seems almost… feral to Peter and gives him pause.

"You want to know what my first word was?" Rocket asks, his voice scarily calm. "The first unnatural word out of this unnatural body?"

Peter blinks at that comment and at the seemingly non-sequitur but Rocket continues before he can speak.

"Please".

The raccoon's voice is quiet, perhaps deceptively so, but Peter has no trouble hearing. He has gone completely still, all sounds from the function fade to the back of his mind; his focus on the small mammal before him.

"It was quickly followed by 'Stop'" Rocket continues. His volume remains low but his intensity increases.

"Well guess what?" he snarls, "They didn't".

Peter can hear the pent up emotions behind the raccoon's words.

"It didn't matter how I said it. They didn't ever stop". Rocket pauses briefly. "Until I made them".

Peter remains silent, fixated on this story Rocket is sharing with him. Rocket almost never shares information from back then—his creation.

"So fuck you" Rocket continues, turning away, some of the tension leaving his body. "I ain't got to be polite to nobody".

Peter lets him go. He doesn't say anything – Rocket wouldn't appreciate an apology – but he knows his silence confers the words he doesn't speak.

A/N: So short… but I needed to get it out.

So I've had this small idea in my head for some time now. It's become a sort of personal head-cannon if you will. I have no idea what they are attending where Peter thinks they need to be polite but I wanted this to happen between the two of them.

No one's looked this over but myself so I hope there are not glaring spelling or grammar mistakes (dialogue grammar is quite confusing for me).
