Ginny sat in her room holding the damned letter to her chest, the words on it reread through blurred eyes countless times. It was past midnight and he had waited until now, when he knew she would be alone and still awake, to send her this horrible message.

How could she have been so stupid to fall for someone like him? Her friends had warned against him but she ignored their concern and passed them off childhood biases. She had said they just couldn't see the person he had become. He was no longer the selfish man who held blood prejudices. He had changed she said.

She looked down at the letter. He had changed in one aspect but he hadn't changed in one that mattered.

She had heard of his playboy ways from school and the trail of hearts he would leave in his wake, but he had assured her that he had matured. He had told her she was his shining light, the morning sun after a night of bad dreams. And she had eaten it all up like the little naive girl she was.

He had taken her everywhere, he got interested in her job and he even met her parents. They were still wary of him but she told them that if he were the old him, he would have never even set foot in her house, so he must have changed. She laughs. How right they were to still be wary.

Ginny looked at the letter one more time:

Ginny, I can't do this anymore. I realize I'm not really one for committment and I can tell that's where you can see this going. I don't want to settle down and get married right now. I still want to keep my options open.

I know we see things differently, so I think it's better if we just end this before it goes any further. Please understand that I love you, but this just isn't who I am. You will find someone one day and he will love you how you need to be loved.

Goodbye, Draco.

With one last sob, she crumpled up the letter and threw it across the room. Though snakes may shed their skin, they were still the same slithery creatures underneath.
