- The Inscription For
Unknown Soldiers
In The American
Graveyard For
World War Two
Soldiers, Normandy
When you walk in, everything seems perfect. There are immaculate
gardens, and white, sparkling fountains. A tribute to the ones who
gave their lives. A flag waves near by, the flags of Hogwarts,
Durmstrang and Beauxbatons linked together. But after the gardens,
you walk down a path. And the path opens up into the true horror of it
all, thousands and thousands of headstones. All identical in look, but
not the inscription. Each one reads different.

Here lies , in Honoured Glory
A COMRADE IN ARMS
Known But To God
They had all died. Each, horrible, pointless deaths. At the hands of the
Death Eaters. They were, of course, defeated, but at what cost ?
Hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. It was now 2050. The
Generation of Harry Potter was 70. Well, what was left of them. Not
very many. A man hobbles along the graves, looking. He is carrying
flowers. This is the first time he has been here. He passes a statue,
and reads the inscription.
Dedicated to those who gave their lives, and we remember those who
we never found, and for what they fought
He walks on. He touches the statue of Dumbledore, the base of it. He
died before the massacre. He died before Hogwarts fell. But he died
with a cause. Dumbledore saved the man's life. As well as many
others. He continues, but he has to lean on his walking stick every
few steps. Finally, he reaches the center of the grave yard. There is a
coliseum like structure surrounding a few graves. He kneels in front of
the central one. He lays the flowers down.
"Uh I just wanted to thank you, for everything that you did You
saved my life. I remember, how you used to think that everything
happened to me How stupid we were then. You were always so
noble I miss you so much. More than you could know. I , uh Well,
Hermione misses you A lot. We all do. But us We were your best
friends. She was your wife And uh Oh ! You shouldn't have done
it ! You shouldn't have ! Oh We all miss you so much ! And you
gave your life for me your life Oh you shouldn't have "
He began to cry. Silent tears. After a while, he stopped.
"And uh I came to say good bye. I never got the chance. And love
is stronger than the grave, right ? I loved you like a best friend, and I
always will. Maybe you can hear me, wherever you are Maybe you
can understand. Oh You died without ever understanding !
Hermione and I loved you so much .. But you're gone you're
gone "
Soon, he gained some strength, and sat up straighter.
"Remember, in our first year How we went through the trap door ?
And you sacrificed yourself for Hermione and I ? And how mad we
were at you ? It isn't like that anymore. We aren't mad. We love you
so much. And it's been so hard, so hard. Everything I love dies !" He
cried into the space.
"First my mom , my dad , and then Dumbledore , Sirius , and then
you I suppose , if you could hear me, you would tell me to get a
life, and stop dwelling on it. But I can't. You meant too much. And
and I wanted to say goodbye. Maybe you can hear me now Maybe
you can understand now "
He left the flowers there, and headed off into the sunset. The dying
sun glinted on the marble headstone with the flowers
