Another random word of the day based story, hope you enjoy!
Thankfulness
It's said that everyone is six people away from everyone else. Sometimes though, it's a lot closer.
Having come to Metropolis from Gotham, Merlin needed a drink, seeing a decent looking bar he went in. Merlin sat down at the bar and got his glass of whiskey from the barkeep. It had been over a thousand years since Camelot and he still couldn't drink any form of alcohol without thinking of Gwaine. It had been so long since he had seen him, the day before he died.
He'd probably have been quite happy with it as a way to go, being hit over the head with a barrel by the angry father of a barmaid. Not bad for a sixty-two year old.
But enough of sad thoughts, he was here to get drunk and mellow. Not to remember things he couldn't change.
He was on to his third glass of whiskey when the man sat next to him. He looked like a normal office worker, if you ignored the broad shoulders and aura of command and power.
"Bad day?" Asked the stranger.
"Bad millennia." Replied Merlin. "What about you?"
"Just feeling a bit thankless." Replied the stranger.
"Definitely know that feeling." Laughed Merlin, "Ever had a day where you all but cut up your friends dinner for him and he just goes off thinking that that's completely normal. No need for thanks."
"Not quite, but not being thanked for things is definitely one of the aspects of my life which follows me like a ghost."
"Yeah well, a few years back" (mentally he thought, more like quite a few centuries) "I was helping out this friend, he wouldn't have managed half of what he did if it hadn't been for me. And when he found out he was too busy having a strop to thank me. Prat."
"It's almost as if they'd rather you didn't help them in the first place!" Said the stranger.
"Only after they find out they get even huffier when they fail without you, so you have to be even sneakier about it because they have to do well but they can't know you're helping." Agreed Merlin, "What's your name anyway?"
"Clark, Clark Kent."
"Martin Hawk." Said Merlin, giving his current pseudonym. " Nice to meet you Clark, I hope you're thanked properly one day."
"You too, Martin, you too."
(Hides from Gwaine lovers) Don't hurt me, I love him too, but this just came to me! Well, what does everyone think?
