A/N: Having done a few Dr Who poems, I felt it was high time for a Tolkien one! This is an exploration of the parting between Elrond and his daughter, Arwen, of their thoughts and reactions. I have always thought this love story so very tragic, especially as Elrond seems to be one of the most ill-fated characters in Tolkien's world; nearly everyone he loves leaves him...anyway, read on an enjoy!
The Sundering
My mind is made up and my path is laid;
So strange to think I shall end my days -
A finite span, a limited score
And this world will be mine to see no more.
How alien, this concept: to perceive thine own end -
To know it is there, to exist and apprehend.
How wearisome a thought for mortals to bear
Yet bear it I must, if this crown I wear.
-
Say not so, my daughter, your path is not set,
I beg you repent ere you fear and regret;
The world has but one star to glimmer and shine -
And I cannot let you go, daughter, you are still mine.
Millennia of wisdom could aid no Lord now,
Only as a father can I plead thee disavow -
For when Aragorn dies, as must be his fate,
You shall not long linger, when grey life cannot captivate.
-
Father, look at me not with your sad, betrayed eyes,
All seasons must pass, all nestlings must fly;
Though always your daughter I am not a child.
Please, grant me your blessing as these late days grow wild.
I know I shall walk beneath dead, bare canopies;
I know I shall pass beyond song and memory -
They Evergreen of Valinor was never my lot;
But remember me, Father, lest these times are forgot.
-
She found her own path and I could not interfere -
I could not prevent the loss of her held most dear.
Now she lies upon a hill top in a distant age,
A tomb of white flowers for the whitest of maids.
And no solace will I find in the triumphs of Men -
For all that she sacrificed, they are corrupted again.
So passes Arwen Undómiel, our Queen of Twilight,
And she will ne'er be forgot 'neath the glimmer of starlight.
