"I didn't know…" _ started to say but stopped. She didn't know what to say. Didn't know what to think. Didn't know anything except the misery that was washing into her soul like tidal waves.
"This isn't the best time for me to talk…" he explained in a low voice; much more mature since she'd last seen him. Biting her lip and closing her eyes she stammers,
"Yeah I know, I'm sorry I didn't mean to… this was unplanned on my part. I was kind of just in the neighborhood and I thought I'd stop by…" she lied, trying to cover the mistake she'd already made. Finally she sighed, looked at him with tears starting to form like film over her eyes. "I'll just be leaving now…" She turned, started to walk away.
"_, wait." She froze, couldn't gather the strength to turn and face him. "I wish you the best." She breathed out a steady wisp of air, releasing a tear with it as she whispered,
"Yeah… Same to you, Sasuke."
She walked away, leaving him to return to his family. To his wife, his kid, his home. Everything she swore they'd have together. Everything she dreamed of having with him. Everything she didn't have.
Getting back into the drivers seat of her old Ford, she rested her forehead against the steering wheel, breathed deeply, and cried.
