Worth Waiting For
Sora walked into her school and saw the majority of the population in red or pink. Sora thought nothing of it. She went to her homeroom and tripped over her friend Jenna who was rolling around in their homeroom teacher (Mr. R.) 's chair. "Jenna! What do you think you're doing!" "Heh heh… Sorry Sora…" "Riiiiight…" Homeroom processed with the usual announcements but with one special one. "Last period will be let out ten minutes early due to the distribution of candygrams. Have a great academic day."
"Yes!" A tall, athletic girl jumped up. Everyone stared at her in stunned silence. She blushed. "I have math last…" In unison the whole class understood, "Oh…" "Cuz… ya know… Social Studies is my favorite class!" "Nice try Ang." "Hey it was worth a try Mr. R.!" Mr. R. was their Social Studies teacher. "It's Valentine's Day!" Sora exclaimed. Now it was her turn to have everyone staring at her. "Yea Sora…" "Shuddup Beth." "Oh I love Valentine's Day!" Mimi had joined the conversation donned in all well… what else? PINK!!!!! Inward Sora groaned. There was only one thing worse than Danielle Japhet. Valentine's Day!
As a child Sora had never been one to get many Valentine's cards. Now, in middle school it was not much different. Added to that, Sora thought that a specific day to show your affection to your boy/girlfriend was, as MR. R. would say, Messed Up! This cannot be happening. Oh please no! But yes. Today was February 14, 2002 otherwise known as Valentine's Day. Aside from receiving a few assorted pieces of candy, homeroom was nothing special.
As the day dragged on Sora felt her aggravation begin to grow. Not only did she feel out of place in her lime green fleece but today of all possible days under the sun was the day the new team picked to have their field trip. With Jenna, Jackie, and Mimi on the trip Sora was left to sit all by herself. Ang stopped by and invited Sora to sit at her table for the day but Sora wanted this time to recollect her thoughts. And of course her day only got worse and worse.
She had Reading next and the boy she liked didn't even look at her the whole period. As she mumbled her way through the hallway she cursed the person who had thought up Valentine's Day. She arrived at Science only to find her crush acting like and idiot (like most boys do. I'm sorry and male readers don't get mad! Please! It's only an inside joke!). When she went up to get her grade after Ang (whose grade was a 99A) (Sora got a 99A too.) she asked for her seat to be moved over 3 (no one was sitting in her whole row). The teacher agreed and Sora was now behind one of her best friends Alyssa. That was nice and she did get some attention from her crush when she moved but aside from that the day dragged on.
After school when she could almost taste the freedom of no more Valentine's Day she remembered she had Drama Club rehearsal. She was then told that she would be taking the part of Meg (she had been an understudy) and had three days to learn her lines before the production of Wishful Thinking. The only Wishful Thinking I'm doing now is that this will all end soon. But before it did the Stage Crew insisted on putting on red lights the whole practice. Thanks Paul, Sora muttered to herself, and Jackson and… Wait was that Matt waiting outside for her? Mr. Bulsbey dismissed the cast and Sora went to check it out. Yes… that was Matt! But what was he doing here?
"Matt?" Sora asked. "Yah look I'm sorry if a acted like an idiot today… and I wanted to know if maybe you wanted to go out with me…?" "I'd love to Matt… the rest of my day stunk but this was definitely worth waiting for."
