I Will Protect You, Always

A Hunger Games Fanfiction

Author's Note: I took great pleasure in writing this story and hope everyone enjoys reading it. Please review it for me- I need the literary criticism. My best regards, Erised

It had been one year.

One year since the turmoil had stopped, one year since the boy returned to her, one year since her darling angel had departed and one year since the girl had been ablaze.

The night air was chilly and displeasing as she sulked along the cobblestone streets.

The moon had an iridescent glow that seemed to flicker across the sky.

And while she wanted nothing more than to be happy, she could not.

Approaching her home, she spotted the rose bushes planted many months ago.

She had never touched them.

She had never wanted them.

The girl ran to flowers, yanking one from the plant and squeezing it tightly in her palm.

A thorn.

She felt the warm trickle of blood escape from her finger.

The girl crumbled to the ground and faded into a mess.

The boy had seen her across the way.

He knew what night it was.

He felt the pain.

It had been one year since he almost lost her.

One year.

He ran up to the girl struggling on the cold street.

The boy looked down wistfully and scooped her into his arms.

He gently carried the girl to the meadow.

Steady, his strong arms keeping the girl together.

He sat down at the base of an old mockingjay tree, the girl still cradled within him.

She looked up then, into his cool blue eyes.

Her own gray eyes had grown sullen with despair.

The boy opened her hand, still holding the sweet primrose.

She laid her head against his neck, hiding from the world.

He set the rose down next to him, and tenderly kissed the wound upon her hand.

She looked into his eyes once again, and saw his pain.

She saw a single tear slide haphazardly down his face.

When the tear reached the boy's lips, she kissed him there.

The girl became frail as the moment washed away.

The boy brought her closer and put his hands gingerly around her face.

They kissed again, more desperate than before.

Together they stayed until the sun began to rise.

She became frightened.

He wished to understand her pain.

The girl, frenzied, wrapped her arms snugly behind the boy's neck.

He rubbed her back smoothly with his capable hands.

The boy whispered into the girl's ear.

She kissed the crook of his neck.

"I will always protect you. Always."
