Dream a Little Dream

The Doctor took the Moment up to the area where he knew it would do the most good. Once locked, there was only one way to get out. He placed it on the stand and prepared to press the button. "Grandfather!" a small voice said and there was Susan, not as a young adult, but as a child. "You mustn't! You are loyal to the Time Lords!" "I have to. The Daleks have just broken into the Crucible! If they take the Eye of Harmony…" Another voice, more female and authoritarian "Doctor, you have to listen to the Time Lords! You have to do what is right!" It was Romana and yet, another voice, one more light and almost happy "You have to listen to them. You may not always agree with them, but they are usually right." It was another Romana, and The Doctor heard a mechanical voice as K9 joined them "The Mistress is correct, Master. You must listen!" Suddenly, a knife flash ceased all voices. It was Leela. "No, Doctor, do what you must. You have to save the universe." And another mechanical voice, another K9, broke the silence "The Mistress is right. Do what must be done, Master. Save the universe." He pressed the button and…

The Doctor woke in his own Tardis. He was still in his bomber jacket, the remnant of a culture he helped to save. He was looking at the console, his nightmare still in front of him. Everyone he knew, dead or gone: he was the only one, the last. Why was it he and not someone else? Yet, he did the job with authority and no one in the universe would be killed by a Dalek ever again. He looked at the console again and…

He was on a ship, faced with a new dilemma. The last of his defenders had fallen to the Daleks. He could hear them say "So, Doctor, are you a coward or a killer." He heard himself say "Coward, every time." the Daleks retorted "Then we will exterminate you! EXTERMINATE!" He retreated to the door of his Tardis, but could not get in. Suddenly, the door opened and a woman with blond hair and clothes that shone stood in the door way. Wrapping one hand around the Doctor, she put her other hand up and destroyed the Daleks and their ships. She stated that "I am here to save my Doctor" and…

The Doctor again awoke, still standing at the console, thinking if that was a dream or his future. Suddenly, a red light flickered on the console. "Gotcha!" he said and headed for the source of that red light.
