Drip. Drip. Drip.
The rain is one of the few noises the break the silence in the RFR shack as Lily and Ray sit in complete and utter silence right next to each other. Acknowledging each other's presence without actually looking at or speaking to one another. Neither one had moved in 45 minutes, and it had been 50 minutes since Robbie and Travis had taken off, not wanting to take part in their blow-out fight.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
The clock on the wall mixes in with the raindrops hitting the roof. The fight had started as something fairly simple, a mere on air squabble between Pronto and Shady Lane regarding dating expectations. It had been stopped by Robbie quickly ending the show with some quick gestures at Travis to play music. Robbie and Travis had disappeared the instant Ray had yelled at Lily that she didn't understand or see anything.
Cough. Cough. Sigh.
Lily had demanded to know what he was talking about and that's when he had announced that he was in love with her and he had been for four years. Adding that he didn't want her to marry Jake after graduation.
Tap. Click. Tap.
In intervals Ray taps his pen and clicks the cap. Lily hadn't been able to respond to that statement for nearly 50 minutes now. She figured that anything between her and Ray had ended when she and Jake started dating the end of grade 10, and then especially when Ray had started dating Megan that same summer.
"Lily."
Ray is the first to break the stifling silence.
"Ray?"
Lily can hear Ray take a deep breath and her own catches, waiting almost as if for judgement.
"Could we...could we just forget about this entire thing?"
Drip. Tick. Sigh. Tap.
"No." Lily's words are firm and she shakes her head.
"No?" Ray seems shocked by the response.
"No I can't just forget about this Ray." Lily sighs. "It's too big and too important to just blow off. We have to talk about this."
"Where is talking going to get us?"
Silence returns to the couple.
Tick. Deep Breath. Drop. Sigh.
"Lily?"
"Yeah?"
"I didn't mean what I said. I love Megan."
Sharp Breath. Tick. Drop.
"That's a lie."
"You can't know that." Ray responds.
"But I do Ray." Lily seems almost tearful at this point.
"No." Ray shakes his head, "I don't love you. I love Megan. We are going to prom together next month and I may even propose to her like Jake proposed to you."
Lily kisses Ray then silencing the babbling. Breaking apart quickly neither one moves and both are still gently touching each other's faces.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
"Ray."
"Lily."
Tap. Click. Tap.
"I'm breaking up with Jake." Lily blurts suddenly.
"Lily..."
"I'm not saying you have to break up with Megan, but you made me realize that I don't love Jake and I am not marrying someone I don't love."
Drip. Tick. Drip.
"Megan and I broke up today."
"Ray I didn't..."
"She dumped me, said she really cared about me, but she knew that my heart wasn't in the same place."
It's silent now, or it seems to be. In all reality the rain is still there and the clock by no means has stopped.
"Lily, I didn't lie."
"I know Ray."
The world still seems to be silent, with the exception of their breathing.
"Ray."
"Lily?"
"I feel the same way. I didn't want to be in love with you especially after I met Jake."
"I know."
Drip. Thunder. Drip.
"Lily? You wanna get out of here? Maybe get something to eat?"
"Like a date?"
"Yeah, I guess, like a date."
"All right, yeah." Lily nods as Ray helps her to her feet.
