Just Passing Through
It was just mid-day in Storybrooke, Maine. Granny's Diner was filling up with people for both lunch and dinner. The dwarves took up most of the counter as usual. Other patrons ranged from mice in a human form to princesses from lands no one in this world had ever heard of other than in long forgotten story books.
"Ruby," Granny, an old woman in a signature green shawl, called. "Get off the phone and pick up your shift!"
"Fine!" The brunette with a red dip dye huffed and puffed as she walked up and down the diner, taking orders and delivering food.
Ruby turned her head slightly to see the door open as a tall blonde boy with dark sunglasses and a long white guide stick walked in.
'Not bad looking,' Ruby thought with a smirk.
"Can I help you?" Granny said from behind the counter. The boy struggles to find the location of the voice with all the commotion in the room. He settled on just looking ahead.
"Umm yeah. I'm Isaac. My friend Hazel and I were just passing through when our car broke down a while down the road. Is there any way someone could help us out?"
"I'm sure my granddaughter can help you back to your car. I'll call the tow company and they'll fix you right up."
"Thank you, ma'am. And this granddaughter is where exactly?"
Ruby sighed and raised a hand, "Here."
"Well shall we go then?"
"Yeah sure." Her incredibly tall heels made her eye level with him. The walked down the main road towards the infamous "Welcome to Storybrooke" sign.
She decided to make some small talk on the way. "Soo whatcha passing through a place like this for?"
"Umm we're on a little road trip. Well not little. Huge actually. We're from Indiana. It's sorta a congratulations for living to be 27 while still having terminal cancer."
"Oh... Uhh wow. I don't know whether to say congrats or I'm so sorry."
Isaac chuckles a little. "Well I am actually cancer free. Lost my eyes but a small price to pay. Besides, robot eyes are so coming soon. It's been like 10 years since I lost them. Gotta get some new ones." Ruby found herself laughing a little.
"You're funny."
"I do try. So does this granddaughter of the nice lady have a name?"
"Oh! Yeah. I'm Ruby."
"Like the precious gemstone or a stripper?"
"Like the color actually." She managed before bursting out with laughter. Isaac laughed right along with her. When they finally stopped she said, "So is this your car?"
"I don't know. Is there a pale twenty-seven year old woman with an oxygen tube in the driver's seat?"
"Yep."
"Then yes. Hazel!"
"Isaac! Ugh you were gone forever!"
"Well that happens when you're in the company of a pleasant girl."
'Pleasant?' Ruby thought.
"You gonna introduce me?" Hazel asked.
Isaac pipped up after a second, "Yeah sure. Ruby, Hazel. Hazel, Ruby."
The two women exchanged hello's. Ruby looked at the short girl with puffy cheeks and short hair as Hazel stared at the tall girl in the spandex-like pants.
"So Ruby, what do you look like? Because my mental image of you is pretty hot. A little Megan Fox with some Natalie Portman. After V for Vendetta, of course." Ruby didn't know who those people were but blushed none the less.
"I don't know. Maybe you're girlfriend can describe me."
"Ha! Me? His girlfriend? I don't think so."
"Don't sound so offended! I'm a real catch!" Isaac smirks at the direction of Ruby's voice, making her blush deeper.
"Well you're like my brother! I can't even imagine that," Hazel defends. The three made good conversation as they waited for a tow truck.
When it finally arrived Hazel and Isaac got in and Ruby headed back towards Granny's.
"Bye Isaac! Bye Hazel, I hope I see you guys again." She called back.
"Bye!" They returned.
"Get any digits," Hazel asked Isaac.
"Not as far as I know. But I think we'll have to make a stop through Storybrooke again soon." And he smiled.
