Sherlock Holmes was not a type of man to show emotion.
He much rather kept things to himself.
He did not immediately exhibit particular emotion toward Watson's relations with his brother.
He felt the emotion- he just didn't show it.
He couldn't stand the thought of his Watson in the arms of another, much less his brother.
When Watson had been kidnapped, he had felt so helpless, everything in him just wanted to break down and sob, but he kept composed.
When Watson wanted to move out, he also, felt moved to tears. He did not show them, but they were there.
Years later, when she agreed to go to dinner with him, he felt the want to shed his tears of joy but held himself together.
He made it through dinner with her and she looked radiant.
Months after she agreed to move back in, he too felt the want to shed a tear. He didn't because men don't, especially not Sherlock Holmes. But he wanted to.
When he asked her to marry him, and she said yes, he honestly was the happiest man alive. He grinned and laughed but couldn't exhibit much more emotion.
The day she walked down the aisle, her radiant beauty brought a tear to his eye. It did not fall, but he felt it was quite alright as he had certainly fallen for her.
Now, as Sherlock sits in the hospital room he is overwhelmed. The bright lights and antiseptic smell gnawed on his senses.
He had no qualms showing his emotion. Tears fell hot over his cheeks, pouring his liquid emotion. He had not deserved this.
She had been in such pain.
He did not deserve this.
He choked as the tears began to regulate.
He did not deserve this phenomenal sight.
He did not deserve this breathtaking Joan Watson. Joan Holmes. His Joan.
The relief he felt, the love, the wonder at it all had washed over him after what he had witnessed.
In his beautiful, radiant, strong, fantastic wife's arms was a beautiful healthy baby boy. His beautiful healthy baby boy.
And his Joan was happy so he was happy, and for the first time in the great detective's life, he had no trouble showing his emotions, and tears - good tears- washed away all prior doubts.
"Sherlock, I want to name him Alastair."
