Air temple Island was peaceful at this time of night. The crescent moon shining her waning light high in the sky, the waters of Yue bay softly pushing and pulling in time with its current and singing a calming lullaby to those who inhabited the island. Well... almost all who inhabited the island. Suddenly, loud, high pitched cries filled the night and woke a very disgruntled Avatar. Korra awoke with annoyance and cast a glance towards her boyfriend, Mako, and shoved him gently.
"Mako," she whispered "The baby's crying."
He gave no response.
She shoved harder.
"Mako," she said a little louder "The baby is crying."
Mako finally seemed to acknowledge her and sighed.
"It's your turn, Korra."
She was about to protest until she realized that she vaguely remembered him moving out of their shared bed earlier that night. Probably so he could quell the currently screaming infant.
Korra groaned and flopped back on their bed.
"Why can't Pema do it."
"Because," Mako responded "It's not Pema's turn. It's your's. Now quit whining and try to calm him down so that we all can get a decent amount of sleep. Some of us have patrol duty in the morning."
Korra pouted at the back of his head and slowly slid out of bed. She slinked out of their-well, really Mako's room. Tenzin would turn all colors of the rainbow if he ever found out that she was sneaking into Mako's room again. She found herself in the temple's nursery, empty, except for the red faced infant and Korra. She walked towards the crib and peered down at the baby, who was clearly very upset by something.
'He ate just a few hours ago,' Korra thought, trying to figure out why the child was crying. 'And Mako probably changed his diaper already...right?' She took a quick whiff at the air. 'Nope, he doesn't need a diaper change. So, what could be wrong?' She peered into the crib again and noticed that the infant was aware of her presence and was reaching towards her, tears still in his eyes.
She reached down for him.
"What's the matter, little guy? Are you okay?"
When she finally settled him against her chest, she noticed something.
He was clinging.
'He's scared.'
Her face softened and she began to slowly rub his back and shush his cries.
"I'm sorry, you were scared, Rohan. And, I'm sorry no one was here to scare away whatever was scaring you. Whatever scared you, it's not here anymore, because you scared it off, because you're strong. But, I promise you, that you won't ever to feel that way again. I'll protect you. And not just me, but your daddy, and your mama, and your sisters, and your brother, and all the air acolytes, the order of white lotus guards, Asami, Bolin, and Mako." she chuckled "Especially Mako. You've got a lot of people willing to make sure that you're safe and that you never have to be scared again."
She glanced down at the now silent Rohan to find the he was sound asleep. She scoffed.
"Some great listener you are." She chuckled.
She placed the five month old back into his crib. She smiled softly and brushed his tuft of hair out of his face.
"You'll be a great mom, you know."
Korra jumped and quickly turned around, settling into a fire bending stance. She relaxed when she realized it was only her boyfriend.
"Thanks, Mako."
He walked towards her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
"You'll make one, too."
"Mm? Make what." Mako asked.
"A great mom."
Mako smiled.
"Very funny, Korra."
"Probably a lot better than me."
"I get it, Korra."
Korra giggles, enjoying his embarrassment.
"Mama Mako."
Mako only sighed and led them back to their-...uh,er, his room.
