It's three Am and I'm feeling fluffy! So here it is! Just a little quick one-shot.
"Seven."
Even in a crowd of millions I would hear that voice as a whisper. Every fibre of my being was attuned to find that single voice. One voice among countless others. The voice belonged to my saviour; saviour from the Borg, from hostile aliens, from a potentially disastrous marriage, and most importantly a saviour from myself.
But here I was not in a crowd, but alone. Setting down the book in my hands, I felt shivers run up and down my spine. My life changed forever after hearing that voice, the powerful, defiant tone echoing through the hive mind. I was a drone, a mindless automaton; the all of a sudden I was free. Alone with my thoughts, I was thrown into a world I did not understand; but there was always that voice to pull me back from the brink.
It had been nearly ten years since I last heard that voice, when we whispered our farewells; and ever since I have longed for nothing more than to hear it again. Releasing a slow breath, I whispered, "Kathryn."
Soft hands rested over my own, she spoke softly, "Its time."
Looking to the holo-images on the coffee table before me I began, "But what about..."
A gentle smile lit up her face, "They'll be fine. I promise." She tilted her head, grey blue eyes flashing in the flickering fire-light, "Do you remember the last thing I said to you?"
I nodded, feeling my eyes becoming heavy, "You said that, you wouldn't leave me behind, that you'd come for me when the time came."
Tracing the lines of age on the back of my hand, with her thumb, Kathryn nodded, "Are you ready?"
"I missed you."
Her expression softened more, "I never left you; you know that don't you?"
I nodded, "I know. But it was not the same."
A warm smile spread over her features, "Well, I'm here to fix that." Holding my hand, she stood, "Are you coming?"
Smiling back, I nodded and stood. Looking back to the old woman in the chair behind me, she appeared to be no more than sleeping. Turning back to Kathryn I felt my heart swell; it was the captain I had fallen in love with. Strong and in her prime, standing smart in her Starfleet uniform.
Pulling her into a gentle embrace, we both looked up as a bright light formed ahead.
She squeezed my hand, "Ready for one last adventure?"
"Lead on Captian."
