Chapter 1
Disclaimer: Blah blah, do not own etc
First fic after reading a few, let's see where this goes.
"But what happened to Vol-, sorry - I mean, You-Know-Who?"
"Good question, Harry. Disappeared. Vanished. Same night he tried ter kill you. Makes yeh even more famous. That's the biggest myst'ry, see... he was gettin' more an' more powerful - why'd he go? It's 'cause he's gone, Harry. Gone for good. Somethin' happened that night. Somethin' about you beat him. Some say he's still alive. Codswallop in my opinion. Dumbledore says he's dead an' that's good enough fo' me. Even the Dark Mark went..."
"The Dark Mark?" Harry interrupted.
"It was some kind o' tattoo that You-Know-Who marked his followers wit'. No spell could get rid o' it. Nothin'! So the fact it's gone makes people think he's gone too."
"You saved us all, Harry." Hagrid beamed at Harry, a great smile across his face. And though Harry couldn't quite believe it; he felt proud. Soon though, that feeling began to fade and Harry's mind was filled with doubts.
"Hagrid," he said in a very small voice, "I think you must be wrong. I could never do all that. I can't be a wizard."
Hagrid only chuckled.
"Not a wizard, eh? Did nothin' happen when you were angry or scared?
Harry thought back. The Boa Constrictor came immediately to mind. After all, hadn't an entire sheet of glass disappeared when his cousin pushed him away from the exhibit? And what about when his Aunt tried to force him into one of Dudley's horrible old sweaters? It just shrunk and shrunk until even his Aunt agreed that there was no possible way it would ever fit him.
Harry looked up at Hagrid, a contemplative look upon his face. He saw that Hagrid had not stopped smiling at him.
"Don't be daft, Harry. Yer a wizard. Yer famous. You'll see when you get ter Hogwarts."
Harry smiled. Until a thought occurred to him.
"Hagrid, does that mean I killed Volde- I mean, You-Know-Who?"
Hagrid looked uncomfortable.
"I sup'ose, in a way, then mabbe yeh did. But tha's nothin' ter be ashamed of. He was pure evil, Harry. Evil to the core. People aren't even sure he was human. Yeh did a great thing tha' day an' don yeh let anyone tell yeh otherwise." Hagrid said firmly. "Yeh gonna be a great wizard, Harry. I can feel it."
Very small but that feels like a good place to end it. Basically this story works under the premise that one part of Voldemort's soul was destroyed at Godric's Hollow. Next chapter should skip ahead to the end of first year and be a kind of bridge chapter between that and second year where things should get a little more interesting.
