They were indulging in that favorite pastime of new lovers, pillow talk.
"So, would you describe yourself as a jealous person?"
She laughed. "Definitely. The second worst thing about meeting your wife..."
"Ex-wife."
"Ex-wife - was seeing how gorgeous she was. And I didn't like hearing that you'd had a real relationship."
"You know you don't have anything to worry about on that front. Or any front."
She smiled. "I know. But jealousy is natural sometimes."
They were silent for a moment. She looked at him, half-playfully, half-earnestly. "What about you? Any green-eyed monsters lurking about?"
He shook his head. "None. That's not my style."
She sighed and said, "That's good. I mean, for me at least, it was really awkward when you met Sam. I'm glad it wasn't uncomfortable for you." She gave him a quick kiss on the arm he had draped over her. "It's all in the past, anyway."
He was silent. She thought maybe he had drifted off to sleep. She decided to do the same.
She was almost asleep when she heard his voice.
"Dani?"
"Yes?" she said drowsily.
"I was really, really jealous of Matt because you loved him and you would never love me."
"Oh."
There was silence again.
"Nico?" She sounded barely awake.
"Yes?"
"Boy, you were really wrong about that," she yawned.
He smiled to himself. He paused for a second. "Wait, Dani, did you just say you loved me?"
She muttered, "Dreaming now."
And then she was asleep.
