I am dead.
I don't know where I am. I see white all around me, with a spec of black in the distance. It looks like there is writing above the spec, but it's far away and I cannot read name is Vanessa. Everyone called me Van. My last name? I don't have one. I never needed one on The Island. Everyone just had first names there, though it wasn't many of us. I knew all of their names, except for Grandfather's. I think he had a name, but I don't know, we just called him Grandfather. He wasn't our actual Grandfather, though, he just led us. We were children, he was the only adult. What a tough job that man loved us. He cared for us greatly, but he didn't always show it. I remember one time I was on the beach on The Island, walking on the sand. Grandfather ran up and tried to attack me. It was something he did; faking attacks on us to build our strength. We were used to it. I quite liked it.I naturally fought back, though I was tired and unprepared to fight. I didn't fare well, he ended up beating me. No injuries, though; there never was, he always stopped there. Never farther. I with he would have been farther; maybe I'd be seeing more than white right , after my failure, he scolded me. He said that I had an inadequate performance and that if I acted like that in a real fight, I was destined to die. I felt like crap, he made me feel like I was nothing. He scolded me again and left. I laid on the sand, feeling much shame. I wanted to die.I didn't. Trust me, the story of how I got here is much, much more interesting and dramatic than that. (And, if you found that dramatic, get ready for the story.)Grandfather taught and guided us until I was thirteen years old. Then, he died. He got really sick, we didn't know what to do; he passed. We were all saddened, scared; we didn't know what was going to be happening , it seemed like they started dropping., one by one. They all started dying, until it was just four of us left: Samuel, Jacob, Emily, and I. We were terrified; The Island was all we ever knew. In fact, we didn't even know of The Other, the rest of the world. We thought that The Island was it, and that after it, was nothing, just a vast ocean that went as far as the eye could see. We didn't know if the ocean even ended, we thought about it, but never really knew. Grandfather was the only one who knew, and he had always said he would tell us when we came of age. He died too soon for that.I was the youngest one out of the four. Samuel was the oldest, then Emily, and then Jacob. Samuel, being the oldest, was the leader of us, and tried to act like a replacement to failed. Then again, who could have succeeded?
