The sunlight gleams off of his silver hair as he sits at the table, checking off item after item of what needed to be bought by the student council for the upcoming cultural festival. There is no sound in the room but for the soft scratch of his pencil and the screech of chair on floor as Machi pushes them under the table, each tilted a little off.
"Look there! It's Yuki Sohma!"
Machi glances over at the boy out of the corner of her eye, observing the way his long lashes laid against his pale cheeks when he blinked, his long fingers as they flipped through pages of paperwork, the slight angle to his nose.
"Oh, he's so pretty! He could almost be a girl!"
"And so nice!"
"I heard he's smart too!"
She frowns, looking thinking, wondering something that didn't make any sense.
"He's just perfect."
As if feeling the weight of her gaze on him, he suddenly stiffens and gentle lays down the pencil. Sitting there thoughtfully for a moment, he reaches up and tousles his hair, rather absentmindedly, and moves the smooth locks to lie in every direction. Machi watches in silent surprise as a finger plucks at the collar of his shirt, flipping one side up and the other down, at odds with each other.
"What did you just say?"
He slowly turns his head to her, a smile spreading across his face as he unevenly pushes the chair in. "Thank you for waiting," his voice is smooth, even. "Are you ready to leave?" Machi nods and flicks off the lights, the only illumination coming from the window.
"I said he wasn't perfect."
"How can you say that?!"
As they walked down the emptying hallways, students chatting as the school day ended, she glanced over again and saw it. The cracks, the flaws everyone overlooked. The smallest gleam of anger as someone bumped into him; the hint of loneliness when a group of chatting friends walked by.
"I just don't think that he is."
No, he is not perfect. He has his twists and turns, defects that make him who he is and show who he was. He hides it, but no, he is not perfect.
If he was, Machi would not love him so much.
A/N: I was bored today and just felt like writing something short and sweet. I love this couple. Will quite possibly write a more serious and longer fic for them later.
