Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto. Sadly.
I wanted to write this so much. It's a sweet and short fic. :)
He had a habit of watching her as she slept. He did not know why, but he felt a strange attachment to this woman.
Why did she put her hand over her heart whenever she sleeps? It was involuntary, like an instinct. It was like a habit. A habit of her trying to protect herself. What was she protecting herself from?
He pondered as he stared at her, sleeping, through tinted glass windows. His eyes followed the steady rising and falling of her chest. He smiled slightly at the peacefulness. White tulips in the ceramic flowerpots rustled in the gentle breeze, the sweet scent of the coming dawn and morning dew reached his nose. He pondered as he stared at her in wonder and curiosity.
"The next time, I'd give you roses," she heard him saying from the depths of her dream. That was Asuma's last words to her before he died. She knew the voice, the deep voice which gave her much security. She stared straight at the darkness in front of her as a wispy but familiar figure of her deceased lover materialized. Her crimson eyes widened. Joy leapt in her heart. She stepped closer to him cautiously, unbelieving what her eyes told her. A small smile tugged at her face when he became clearer into view.
"Asuma?" She whispered softly with the gentleness she never knew she had. She was afraid he would disappear for a long time like he did after the mission involving the wretched Akatsuki. "Asuma," she called out once again as she walked a few steps closer to him. Her voice had a hint of urgency in them. She reached out an eager hand to touch him. As soon as she did that, she felt her hand pass through nothingness as the man in front of her disappeared.
The joy disappeared as soon as it appeared. Her hand fell limply to her side as she felt her knees go weak. She crumpled onto the ground gracelessly. Whimpering as pain from an unknown source passed through her like an electrical jolt, she shuddered. The darkness choked her. It felt like what she felt on the fateful day she knew about Asuma's death. It felt like grief.
She felt tears cascade freely down her pale cheeks. Her eyes hurt from the crying. Lying raw and broken on the ground, she put a hand to her heart. It hurt so much there, like a knife was stabbed into her heart and she was left bleeding.
He watched her as she clutched her heart tighter than ever. He watched as tears escaped from the corners from her closed eyes. He watched as she murmured "Asuma" gently, her voice full of longing. His eyes widened in realization. He was the cause of her deep sorrows.
HIM.
Slowly, he turned around, his back facing the window. Slowly, he took off into the depths of the dark forest ahead.
Birds were twittering cheerfully in the morning. Kurenai smiled a little as she opened her window to inhale the fresh morning air. Her face lit up with a tiny smile when she saw a single red rose on her windowsill. She stroked the petals of the red rose gingerly. Staring out into the woods, she mumbled a grateful "Thank you".
Hidan leaned against a tree, hidden from Kurenai's sight. "Red roses symbolize love, right? Why the hell did she thank me instead?" Hidan thought aloud. His face darkened slightly as he said, "Bet she won't even thank me if she knew it was me…" He laughed bitterly at the fact he would never get near her.
"This must be karma…" Hidan thought as he instinctly reached into his Akatsuki and put his hand around the string of beads around his neck.
