Light streamed in from somewhere, that was the first thing she noticed. It wasn't dark but the whole room was black. Light gave the room a soft glow, though she could not tell where it was coming from. Nothing was there in the room, and she knew it was a room for she could see where the walls met forming the four corners of the walls. There was no door, nor window, but she suddenly realized she was sitting in a chair.
There was a knock from behind her. Turning around she started to get up to open the door, but a little girl with pig tails beat her to it, rushing into the arms of the woman who entered.
"Mommy, are sad?" The words echoed off the walls, ringing back into Maka's ears as she watched herself get hugged by her mother. Her face felt wet, knowing that she must be crying back in the real world Maka willed herself to get up.
It was 4 am. Maka sat up in bed slowly, giving herself time to adjust. And as she'd done a million times before, Maka got out of bed and made her way silently to the bathroom. She didn't turn on the lights. One could only break a mirror so many times and blame it on clumsiness. A glass of water was next to the sink and she used the water inside to wash her face. Soul was sleeping, not 20 feet away, and she couldn't risk waking him.
The water was warm; its time spent in the heat of the Arizona desert making it soothing against Maka's swollen eyes. Five minutes later Maka Albarn was back in bed, too tired to sleep, the darkness not nearly dark enough to calm her soul.
" A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body" Maka said silently to herself before rolling her eyes and deciding to give sleep another try.
