Music and Religion

"So, which one do you like more?" Robert asked casually, preferring to look out of the window rather that at the blonde.

"I…I like them both -" Georges stammered.

"Equally. Yes, I know. You're one of them." Robert sighed, only confusing Georges further. "Let's say you had to sacrifice one for the other. Which would you choose?"

"…" Georges closed his eyes. 'Why does everything Robert says make me think so hard? Will I have to re-evaluate myself to live in this world where trust is fragile and equality causes people pain?"

"Georges!" Freddy, possibly the loudest, and definitely the shortest boy in the school, appeared from nowhere, grabbing the young blonde's arm. "Time for music!"

Robert watched the shorter boy drag Georges away in silence. If only he could leave that boy alone. Nothing good could come from getting too close to Saphir…

As soon as his fingers hit the keys, Georges found his haven. The cello played the melody; the two instruments complimenting each other, talking together in a language only musicians would understand, but everyone could appreciate.

The piano part wasn't complex, but Georges was so engrossed in the music, he didn't spare that a thought.

"Very good!" Freddy smiled once it was over. He waited for a response, but Georges attention was elsewhere.

The Steinway was such a perfect piano. Music was so fulfilling…It uplifted the young boy's soul, and comforted his mother…

"So, which one do you like more?"

A world without music would be such a lonely place. Was music the voice of God, reaching out to everyone's ears, filling souls with a priceless prayer?

"Georges?"

"Oh! Coming Freddy!"

How could he answer Robert?

"Music and religion..." Robert said when Georges appeared by his side at the window.

"Hmm…Robert?"

"You can't live without either of them, right?" For some reason, there was a sad tone to the older boy's voice. "So, which do you like more?"

It was a simple question really.

Georges pressed the cross to his lips. "God will guide me." He said quietly. 'Without faith I am an empty shell with a smile. My belief in God, reciting a prayer – that's music to my ears…"

Green eyes shot open. "Music and religion…" Georges mused. 'They're linked…So what if I say I like them both equally? I cannot sacrifice one over the other because they exist together, in a harmony I know so well…'

Georges left the chapel with a smile, unaware of the tall figure watching him.

"Robert! Good morning!" Georges flashed the older student one of his famous smiles, missing the annoyed look on Henri's face.

"Yo." Robert returned with a grin.

"I…Um…you were right. As always…" Georges whispered, feeling Robert's eyes on him. "I cannot live without either of them. But I don't have to choose a favourite. I realise that I can like them equally, without separating them."

"I knew you wouldn't answer my question like a normal person!" The dark-haired teen teased, but the blonde's attention was on Jean now, listening to his story about the lack of female contact he had during school-time.

'You aren't a Saint, remember…' Robert sighed to himself. 'But your words are my music. To hear you speak, I'll sacrifice religion."

Yay! Well, I'm really sorry if this doesn't make sense at all. It was a spur of the moment idea that I felt I just had to write down. Also, I've only read books 1-3.

Hopefully, more authors will add to this section! I love this manga, and if you didn't notice, I love music too!

Happy Independence Day! (Or evening, which would be more appropriate…)

Thanks for reading…
