My house, where I live with my parents and younger brother is right next to the town center As I get a glass of water from the kitchen can hear the sounds of people laughing and shouting. The sounds of parties and gatherings I'm never invited to. Not that I mind much, I'm not really a people person. I'd much rather be home fiddling with my latest invention. At school I'm never noticed and I like it that way. I'm quiet and invisible except when they stick the scores from last week's test on the notice board

Beetee Witts

Hannah Steam

Flicker Turret

Everyone's gotten so used to the fact that I beat them every time that they now think of first place as second

Music starting up in the square brings me out of my stupor. It's a folky tune that instantly wants to make even me want to jump up and start dancing, which probably isn't a very good idea with my two left feet.

Last night I had a dream we were inseparably entwined

The voice is sweet and high pitched, obviously a girls, and there's something about the tone that instantly pulls me towards it. Grabbing my glass I step out into the square. From here I can hear the noise from the crowd more clearly and also the girl's voice.

Last night I had a dream we were inseparably entwined,

Like a piece of rope made out of two pieces of vine,

Held together, holding each other, with no-one else in mind,

Like two atoms in a molecule, inseparably combined

A thin smile creeps onto my face, getting larger and larger until the girl sings "like two atoms in a molecule" when I let out a snort of laughter. This line makes it so obvious that this song is one from district 3.

I cheer loudly along with the rest of the districts youths as the banjo strums its last cord. I stand for a minute in the street, letting my mind wonder back to the song, grinning stupidly at the lyrics. I'm abruptly brought back to earth by someone crashing into my side. I look over and see the girl who was singing on stage a minute ago. I can now see all of her delicate features closely, from her blonde hair hanging messily around her flustered face to the faint scattering of freckles that dust her nose.

"Here" I say holding out my glass of water to her "you look like you need it" Mental slap! Why did I say that! But thankfully the girl only lets out a small laugh that sounds like the wind dancing through the trees, and gratefully takes a gulp of water. The glowing red of her face dims slightly.

"Thanks" she says with sincerity in her voice "I'm Flicker, Flick for short" her face breaks into the most amazing grin that I'm sure would make even president smile.

"Hi Flick" I answer taking but the half empty glass and out stretched hand "I'm Beetee" I spend the rest of the night with Flick talking about anything, from the lyrics in her song to my latest tinkering. I'm glad to hear that she just as interested in them as I am.

Later that night, or should I say early the next morning, I lie in bed thinking about my new friend. Her voice, her hair, her smile, her eyes, her laugh. They all weave their way into my dreams and I fell for once in truly happy.
